During popular festival celebrations in Nigeria such as Christmas, Nigerian roads are always congested with various road users. For many, it is an opportunity to visit home and reunite with families, friends and loved ones. One of the popular roads in Nigeria that usually has heavy traffic leading to snarl-ups, is the overhead bridge in Onitsha in the eastern part of the country.
The River Niger bridge is the main gateway to the East from the west of Nigeria
On Thursday, Anambra command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), made it known that it has deployed officers and men to the state to co-ordinate and ensure that roads are safe during this Easter celebratins.
Mr Andrew Kumapayi, the Sector Commander of Anambra Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), said that about 988 officers and men, which include 488 Regular Marshals and 500 Special Marshals have been mobilized for this initiative. He told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Awka, that the Easter special patrol would commence that same Thursday 18th of April.

Kumapayi added that along with other roads in the state, special attention would be given to River Niger Bridge, which is known for heavy traffic in seasons like this. In his words:
“We are fully ready for the Easter festivities in order to ensure safe motoring in the environment during the season. The Anambra command has deployed officers and marshals, including logistics to strategic locations in the state, to ensure free flow of traffic, especially at the Onitsha overhead bridge noted for traffic gridlock.”
The Commander also explained the special exercise would end April 23.
FRSC regulates and monitors interstate roads
The River Niger Bridge which was built in 1965 is located in Onitsha, Anambra State. It is a major bridge that connects south-eastern Nigeria with western-Nigeria, thus it is an unavoidable landmark.
FRSC commander, Kumapayi also revealed that medical members and ambulances had also been mobilized to offer quick medical services in case of any emergencies. He added that tow trucks had been placed and instructed to remove any obstructions that could cause traffic jams on the road.
