Overview

Toyota Sienna has been around for a good deal of time; in fact, she has been around as far back as 1997 when the production first models of the minivan were presented to the public. This famous minivan enjoyed some real success in the market and is currently embarking on its fourth generation of production experience. The fourth generation was only introduced to the public at last years New York International Auto Show, with the 2021 models of this minivan being the first models of this production cycle.

The models of the Toyota Sienna 2021 come with some really intricate and delicate design that makes the ride a lot more appealing and attractive to a larger audience than the previous models. It's just that kind of car that will make you think twice before overlooking it for any other options.

We will now try to explore and do a detailed review of this Toyota Sienna latest model, as we explore what's new and what's hot about the minivan, that just enjoyed the latest redesign.

Exterior

The redesigned Toyota Sienna 2021 is the mother of sweet curves and contours, giving the van a sleek and cool look. The front bonnet has a very different style of contouring with the new design going for a more simple look as against the contouring on the Toyota Sienna 2020 that tapered down the bonnet towards the Toyota emblem. On the side of the van's body, the new contouring design is even more delicate, with deep lines running from the tip of the tail light right over the fuel tank cover, and runs downwards across the two doors.

The fascia design is also different from the previous years model, with the 2021 model sporting one large grille (metallic and mesh depending on the trim level), that covers the lower front area of the van. The rear area of the newly redesigned Sienna also got a touch-up, with the rear windshield size getting reduced to give room for bolder panel designs. One other redesign effort obvious in the rear area of this van is the new taillight style which is a lot more slender and sleeker with long sharp lines compared to the style of the previous model.

The lines and contours make the 2021 Sienna a bolder looking van

Interestingly, the 2021 Sienna is a bit stockier than the previous-year models, with its body width increased from 78.1 inches to 78.5 inches made obvious by the increase in the vehicle's wheelbase length by a good 1.2 " to 120.5 ", while the body height decreased from 71.3 inches to 69.7 inches. Moreso, the ground clearance for the redesigned Sienna was reduced from 6.6 inches to 6.3 inches. Clearly, the 2021 version of the Sienna was designed to be stockier than the previous models likely because of the rides lower power output.

Interior and technology

There is a lot of really cool design thinking employed in the redesign of the Toyota Sienna 2021 interior. In fact, the 2021 Toyota Sienna interior design is made more executive and plush-looking than previous versions of this van. One immediately obvious new feature in the redesigned Sienna is the bridge-like centre console and the panelling up of the space you would find in previous models, between the driver and passenger armrest. This new design gives the Sienna its new executive look.

There is a lot of movement and reposition of infotainment devices in the 2021 Sienna. The multimedia screen is now mounted atop the dashboard compared to the 2020 model which had an in-dashboard design. This new design means that the somewhat clumsy infotainment cluster in the 2020 models is replaced by the standalone 9-inch touch screen multimedia system. This design step is what allowed for the tweaking of the centre console design to the bridge-like style found in this new model.

Interior spacing and seats

When it comes to interior spacing, the 2021 Toyota Sienna seems to offer a lot more legroom across the second and third rows. This can be attributed to the increase in the length of the van from 200.6 inches to 203.5 inches. However, there is a 0.2-inch reduction in the front legroom from 40.5 inches to 40.3 inches.

A lot more legroom for the second and third-row seat passengers

When it comes to cargo space, there is, however, a drastic drop in the numbers with the cargo space for the area behind the front row dropping from 150 cubic-ft in 2020 models to 101 cubic-ft in the current version of the van. This reduction can be partly traced to the reduction in the overall width and height of the van.

With the extra legroom, comes the more comfortable captains chair for the second-row seat, which also comes with an ottoman. However, this seating option is only available in the higher Platinum and Limited trims of the minivan. Toyota, however, advised that the captain's chair with the ottoman MUST not be utilized when the car is in motion as this throws up some really negative conditions that could be life-threatening in the event of an accident as the restraints may be shifted to parts of the body that might seriously harm the passenger or even result in death in extreme cases.

Technologies

On the technology side of things, the Toyota Sienna 2021 comes with support for WiFi connectivity and is also Apple CarPlay compatible. There is also an option to remotely connect with your Sienna using a compatible smart device, be it a smartwatch or a smartphone. There is also a good supply and distribution of USB ports all over the vehicle interior for ease of use for passengers in the minivan, irrespective of where you are seated.

Safety

On the safety side of things, the Sienna is well packed. It comes with sensor aided front and rear park assist, seat belt reminder for the rear seats. The minivan is also fitted with two of Toyota's famous safety systems, the Toyota STAR Safety System and the Toyota Safety Sense 2.0.

The STAR Safety System consist of the following,

  • Smart Stop Technology (SST)
  • Braking Assist (BA)
  • Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD)
  • Anti-lock braking system (ABS)
  • Traction Control (TRAC)
  • Vehicle Stability Control (VSC)

On the other hand, the Safety Sense 2.0 Safety Suite include the following features,

  • Lane Departure Alert and Lane Tracing Assist
  • Pre-collision system
  • Road Sign Assist
  • Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
  • Automatic High Beams

Engine and performance

There is also major readjustment in the powertrain of the 2021 Toyota Sienna, with the V6 engine being replaced by the 2.5 Liter 4-cylinder engine. However, the 4-cylinder engine is now supported by Permanent Magnet Synchronous electric motors, with the lower models coming with just two front motors while higher models come with 2 front motors and one rear motor.

The implication of this is that all Toyota Sienna 2021 models come with a hybrid power system. However, the lower trims with just two front motors support the front-wheel drivetrain only while the higher trims with the additional rear motor enjoy the all-wheel drivetrain which Toyota calls the Electronic On-Demand All-Wheel Drive (AWD) System.

In terms of performance the 2021 Toyota Sienna powertrain offer numbers that are not so bad. It accelerates from 0- 60 mph in just about 7.7 seconds while hitting 100 mph from rest in just 21 seconds. It also reaches a governor limited top speed of about 116 mph which is impressive for a bulky van like this one.

Affordabilty

This section (Affordability) will be divided into two. The first part will give the price details of the various trims of the 2021 Toyota Sienna while the second part will highlight the fuel efficiency of the minivan.

Toyota Sienna 2021 Price

The 2021 Toyota Sienna is still very fresh and so you would expect that you will only find brand-new models of this minivan in the market at the moment. But if you are interested in getting a used model of the 2021 Sienna, then you may have to wait a few more months as owners of the fresh ride decide to sell for whatever reason they may have. Below is a table that shows the manufacturer stated retail price MSRP of brand new models of the 2021 Toyota Sienna.

Manufacturer Stated Retail Price (MSRP) of the 2021 Toyota Sienna
Models  Price in USD Price in Naira
2021 Toyota Sienna: LE model $35,635 ₦14.7 million
2021 Toyota Sienna: XLE $40,925  ₦15.6 million
2021 Toyota Sienna: XSE $43,175 ₦16.45 million
2021 Toyota Sienna: Limited $47,875 ₦18.24 million
2021 Toyota Sienna: Platinum $51,075 ₦19.5 million

Fuel Economy

When it comes to fuel efficiency, the Toyota Sienna 2021 posts some of the most impressive numbers, which is down to its use of a smaller 2.5-litre engine and the use of electric motors to supplement the engine's power. All the models post an almost similar mileage estimate, with the lower trims posting an EPA fuel economy rating of 36/36/36 (City/Highway/Combined) while the higher trims posted a 35/36/35 (City/Highway/Combined) mileage estimate.

The implication of these numbers is that the 2021 Sienna is by far one of the most fuel-efficient in the minivan category. The more reason why you should consider getting either these brand-new models or wait for the used models to hit the market a few months from now. But now that the used models may post poorer fuel efficiency numbers due to months of use.

Conclusion

Clearly, the Toyota Sienna 2021 is just what we were expecting of a 2021 kind of ride. The ride offers some really cool features as standard, like the hybrid powertrain, the Toyota STAR Safety System and the Toyota Safety Sense 2.0. However, you may find some really cheap plastics lining up the interior and the power output may not be as heavy as the 2020 models but the electric motors offer enough to juice the spins off so fast that you feel like flying on your seats. All-in-all, the Toyota Sienna 2021 is by all standard a superfamily ride and is a good value bargain.
