1. Introduction of 2019 Lexus RX 450hL

Variety is the spice of life. Our tastes differ according to our individual needs. Lexus understands this and provides different models to cater to its customers.

The Lexus R is, by all means, a great car, but it might not do it for some people in terms of size as it is too small. There is also the Lexus GX. Although it has enough space, the three-row vehicle is considered too big by some users who do not need extra space. In light of this, the 2019 Lexus RX 450hL comes to the fore. It is not too small, neither is it too big. It lies in the middle.

The suggested price tag for a base model is $50,970 (₦18.4 million) while the As-Tested price stays around $60,950 (₦20 million). Please note that these prices do not include delivery fees and may vary at different dealerships.

The RX 450hL has an attractive exterior, doesn't it?

2. Engine & Road performance of 2019 Lexus RX 450hL

With a length of 196.9 inches, the 2019 Lexus RX 450hL is longer than most cars in its category by 4.4 inches.

Save for its rump that seems a tad awkward, the LX has the looks and feeling of an RX. The RX 350L offers a 3.5-liter V6 engine of 295 horsepower in its standard package, but that does not particularly guarantee high fuel efficiency. To get more in that area, users may have to go for the gasoline-electric hybrid RX 450hL which has 308-hp.

Rated by the Environmental Protection Agency to score 29 miles for each gallon in fuel economy (combined), the RX L is better than the RX 350L infamous for gulping so much fuel.

You can call its engine a smooth operator as it doesn't make unnecessary noise

Are you keen on having an exciting driving experience? If yes, you might be disappointed as the excitement may not be forthcoming. On a closer look, the lack of excitement is not a knockdown. On-road excitement often comes with disturbing noises. The midsize cross over on the stables of Lexus is cushy on its wheels. The RX 450hL is serene on the road. You do not get to hear how the engine functions to keep the car moving, thanks to a very quiet cabin.

The electric powertrain of the RX L finds a balance between being smooth and powerful at the same time. It further enhances road performance with its well-calculated transitions between different power sources. In terms of driving engagement, the midsize cross over is not your best fit. But if engagement is not top on your list, it should not be a problem.

3. Interior features of 2019 Lexus RX 450hL

To be honest, the third-row seat waters down the efforts of the 2019 Lexus RX 450hL. It would not be missed if not present. To top it all, Lexus chose to install the HVAC rear controls in no other place but the third row.

Not many people go all the way to the back of third-row crossovers unless there are many passengers aboard. Such a feature would have been perfect for the more comfortable second row.

The Lexus RX standard package deserves some accolades for doing a good job combining luxury and comfort. The RX 450hL, on the other hand, compromised on total comfort for a third-row that is too tight. If third-row comfort is your motivation in a cross over, the RX L will not satisfy you.

There's barely any space in the third-row

Besides the third-row, other parts of the RX L – front row and second row are very comfortable. You can lounge for long without feeling the need to get out. The seats made of leather are very soft, allowing you to relax well.

Tall occupants have nothing to worry about as the legroom is more than adequate, same applies to the headroom. The cabin is void of any disturbing sound from the engine.

Quite frankly, the RX L would have been way better without a third-row. Accessing that area of the car is difficult due to the lack of space. It suffices to say that the automaker is guilty of over-styling on this one. Sometimes, less is more. In their defense, perhaps adding a third row, by all means, was a marketing strategy to make the car appealing to a wider consumer base.

5. Conclusion

If you are looking for perfection, the 2019 Lexus RX 450hL cannot give you that. But come to think of it, is any car really perfect?

Staying true to Lexus’ trademark, the cross over offers a touchpad that enables you to have control over the infotainment system. Although the 2019 model does not offer advanced features like the Android Audio Compatibility, Apple CarPlay and touch screen technology, the automaker has them present in the 2020 model.
