The arrival of this car stirred up the market with an eye-catching design, a classy and advanced interior and a powerful performance. The car has also become one of the most desired SUVs and one of the fiercest rivals of other SUVs on the market.

The Ford Explorer 2018 is the fifth generation in the lineup and is also the model that gets most of the updates and facelifts in its design, interior and engine. What makes the Explorer stand out in the segment is its superb quality and great capability to maneuver through any terrain easily.

So now, without any further waiting, we are so excited to bring you a deep insight into this beloved SUV. Let’s explore our Ford Explorer 2018 review right now!

2018 Ford Explorer Sport | New Car Review

1. Ford Explorer 2018 model

The Ford Explorer 2018 model comes with 5 options of variants including the Explorer, the Explorer XLT, the Explorer Limited, the Explorer Sport and the Explorer Platinum.

Ford Explorer 2018 Sport and Ford Explorer 2018 XLT

In Nigerian auto market, the Ford Explorer 2018 Sport and the Ford Explorer 2018 XLT are considered as two versions that receive most favors from Nigerian car enthusiasts. The Explorer 2018 Sport has faster and more rigid steering gear, as well as more stable and thicker bars. The Explorer offers a smooth ride in most terrains, even with the largest tires and wheels of the Sport, and the steering of its all models has a fast response to large and small inputs. Meanwhile, the Explorer 2018 XLT comes equipped with outstanding features like LED signature lighting, Intelligent Access with Push-Button Start and a Reverse Sensing System.

These excellent may be one of the main reasons why the two variant gain a great love from Nigerian.

The Ford Explorer 2018 exterior gets a handful of change in design

The Ford Explorer 2018 exterior gets a handful of change in design and keeps the same shape as its 2011 model year. In general, the 2018 variant receives more revolution in the cabin than its style.

So the car still boasts an over-the-decade visual approach with a side cladding and an eye-catching grille adorned with nifty textures, clean edges and an agreeable collection of crisp corners. The shape of the Explorer is just designed to reveal that it belongs to the SUV segment but actually, it looks more like an old Freestyle wagon of Ford in the 1990s.

The Platinum models are equipped with LED lights and special decoration is also included in the luxurious Explorer. Meanwhile, the top-of-the-line versions meet the standard with new LED headlights and exhausts.

3. Ford Explorer 2018 Interior

3.1. Cabin space

The Explore 2018 has shown a great improvement in its cabin, compared to the plasticky interior of its predecessor. And now, the car gets a good-looking interior, boasting to challenge its strong rivals like the Grand Cherokee and the Durango.

The Ford Explorer 2018 interior is capable of housing up 7 people with 3 seating rows, which is comparable to the Honda Pilot and the Buick Enclave in the SUV segment.

With a 112.8 - inch wheelbase and a 198.3-inch length, the vehicle can provide comfortable and convenient seating space for 7 people. Speaking of the front seats, they are highly appreciated because of their ample space, comfort and supportive functions. The seats offer enough side bolstering to grip occupants and soft cushion, making the passenger feel relaxed, enjoyable and comfortable even after a long trip. What’s more, the front seats of the Ford Explorer 2018 redesign are added ventilation, heating and power adjustment to pleasure all people seating in the car.

The second row offers 2 sets of lower anchors and 3 tether anchors.  Meanwhile, the third row is just installed a full set of lower and upper anchors in one seat. However, the lower anchors are mounted too deep in the seat cushions, making it hard and tricky to find the anchors. It also comes equipped with a safety seat for a child placed in the middle seater. The second and third row are said to be so cramped. In detail, although the second row is foldable but the space between the door frame and those seats is not sufficient. And for the third row, it is not easy to get in it. As being folded, the third can add 21 cubic feet to the cabin space which measures of 81 cubic feet, which could contain some small or average-sized stuff.

3.2. Infotainment system

The base infotainment system includes a 4.2-inch touchscreen, phone setting, cruise control, steering-wheel audio, power features, an AM/FM/CD audio system with 6 speakers and Bluetooth with voice-activated commands for various entertainments. It is also equipped with a 12-speaker Sony system for Audio.

Ford recently revised the interior of the new Ford Explorer 2018, and changed some sensitive touch controls for buttons and nippers. It also increases the humidity and reduces the sound. Overall, the complex interior of the Explorer looks pretty assembled and handsome.

Ford has also given an update to the latest Explorer with the Sync 3 infotainment system which has an agiler and cleaner interface, faster responses than the previous MyFord Touch system. It also has an in-car data connection armed with 4G LTE and the capacity of connecting 10 devices.

4. Ford Explorer 2018 review: Engine and performance

All versions of the Ford Explorer are combined with a 6-speed automatic transmission, an independent suspension and front- or all-wheel drive.

In detail, the base variant is a 3.4 L V6 engine which can produce 290 hp and 346 Nm of torque, which provides a strong acceleration and with the sports mode, keeps the 6-speed’s gears longer and speeds up its shift. On city roads, the engine offers a smooth ride but on the more challenging terrains, it requires the driver to manhandle the shift lever and push the gas pedal to reach a great performance.

The base variant is a 3.4 L V6 engine which can produce 290 hp and 346 Nm of torque

For the midrange model, it is powered by a 2.3 L turbo-4 engine which is also used in the range of Lincoln, generating 280 hp and 420 Nm of torque. Compared to the base variant, this powertrain offers a higher price (about 3000 pounds), a better performance with quicker responses and acceleration, good grunty low-end power and less noise as operating. And if you are in a fear of the V6’s laggy shifting, the 2.3 L will satisfy you with a greater capacity even when the car is paired with a heavy all-wheel drive.

The Explorer offers a better performance with quicker responses and acceleration

And the top-spec version works with a twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6 engine which is capable of cranking out 365 hp and 474 Nm of torque. This type of engine is just sold with all-wheel drive. This strong engine makes the driver feel his ride so powerful and sometimes feel like an adventuring experience.

Each Explorer is equipped with a rear suspension with multiple links and a front strut. Speaking of the towing capacity, the Explore comes with a maximum of 5000 pounds, which is considered to be an acceptable level for a gear ratio. It still slips through the mud smoothly with its all-season tires.

The system’s centerpiece is a multi-traction drive system that transfers from normal to Sand, Snow and Ruts mode, adjusting braking and power to match the conditions.

In esoteric cases, those electronics can't completely satisfy an excellent off-road driver, because they need some time in the system to start working.

When it turns to the fuel economy, the entry-level version generates 17 mpg on city roads, 24 mpg on the highways and 20 mpg in average (16/23/20 as added the all-wheel drive).  The 2.3 L measures of 19/27/22 mpg (18/25/21 mpg for all-wheel-drive) and the turbo V-6 powers drinks 16/22/18 mpg, respectively.
