This is the first exciting update reaching us here at Naijauto for this week. It’s about the world’s first ever Hybrid technology-based cruise ship that on Monday, July 1st 2019, headed out for the artic on its very first voyage, according to Hurtigruten, the cruise operator.
Roald Amundsen – the world’s first Hybrid cruise ship is capable of taking 500 passengers at once and it is designed so that it can sail the waters in harsh climatic conditions.
1. Roald Amundsen to embark on its first voyage this week!
This Hybrid ship “Roald Amundsen” has been named after “Roald Engelbregt Gravning Amundsen” – a Norwegian explorer popularly known around 1903-1906 for navigating through Northwest sea route or Passage and for being the first explorer to reach the earth’s the South Pole in the year 1911.
This new hybrid “green” cruise ship has headed from Tromsoe to the Arctic this week and it's expected to sail all by way of the Northwest sea route down to Alaska after which it then turns southward to arrive Antarctica in October 2019.

2. Roald Amundsen performance details
While speaking with Reuters, Daniel Skjeldam - the Chief Executive of Hurtigruten, explained that under typical ideal situations, this ship is capable of running for about 45 – 60 minutes solely on battery power but it also has engines that use the marine gas oil for power as well.
The estimate given by the production company indicates that the hybrid technology implemented in the ship helps it achieve lesser fuel consumption as well as has a 20% reduction in emissions of CO2 when compared to other regular cruise ships that usually operate solely on marine gas oil.
Speaking further about this “Roald Amundsen” hybrid ship, Skjeldam said;
“It’s designed to take excessive energy from the engines and put into the battery when the ship doesn’t need it, and put it back into the engine when the ship needs it – it is a way of reducing emissions significantly without having charging stations available,”
“We expect batteries to be an important part of shipping in the years to come, but of course we don’t expect our ships to be able to operate only on batteries, because the ship can sail up to 18-20 days in areas where there are no charging points,”
“We expect a revolution on battery technology for ships, we expect batteries to be lighter, more effective, and we’ve set aside extra room for more batteries to be installed when battery packs become more effective,”

He also went further to reveal that the company has already placed an order for a second Hybrid ship which should be delivered around the later part of this year 2019 and it's expected to have a bigger battery pack that comes with twice the power of the one currently in the Roald Amundsen.
