The new Volkswagen Touareg R super SUV is a powerful 455 hp plug-in hybrid premium mid-size SUV set to be hosted at the 2020 Geneva Auto Show.

The German automaker, Volkswagen, has come up with an exciting new plug-in hybrid model – Touareg R, which is a welcome addition to the likes of Passat GTE and the set-to-be-released Golf GTE.

For its exterior look, the plug-in hybrid is a top-ranging mid-size SUV featuring air intake, R-Style bumpers, lower door sections, black side mirror caps, black grille, and black trim strips offered on the side windows. Other interesting features include 20-inch Braga alloy wheels, darkened LED lights, a model exclusive Lapiz Blue Metallic color (optional), and you can also get the 22-inch Estoril wheels or 21-inch Suzuka wheels.

For its inside look, buyers get Vienna leather seats embroidered with contrast stitching and R embossing, malfunction steering wheel (new-leather wrapped), High Gloss Black and Silver look center console, Illuminated stainless steel sill panel trim and door-cards and dashboard fitted with Silver Wave aluminum decorative trim.

Standard features on the Volkswagen Touareg R model include a 15-inch infotainment system, 12-inch digital instrument panel, LED Matrix headlights, 4-zone climate control, panoramic sunroof, and many others. Customers will have to pay more to enjoy features such as Travel Assist, Dynaudio premium sound system and Night Vision.

Engine specifications and driving modes

The third-generation model comes fitted with a V6 3.0-liter TSI gasoline engine with an output of 335 horsepower and an electric motor of 134 horsepower, making its combined generative output to be 455 horsepower and 516-pound feet of torque.

With the presence of a fitted 8-speed automatic transmission and center differential lock acting as transfer box, its powertrain is linked to a 4Motion all-wheel-drive system. The plug-in hybrid model has the ability to accelerate from zero to 62 mph in 5 seconds. Electronically, its peak speed is limited to 155 mph and 87 mph if driving on its electric system.

The driver can switch to hybrid for optimal setting and E-Mode for zero-emission driving. Another impressive feature of this new model is the ability to alter battery charge level in order to increase the regenerative braking level by turning the V6 into a generator. The driving settings include Comfort, Eco, Individual, Sport, Normal, Snow, and Off-road.

Customers can get their hands on the underbody protection if they opt for Off-road Package (optional), adding two additional modes such as Sand and Gravel. The new Volkswagen Touareg R offers 3.5 tonnes as its peak towing capacity.

Price and Release date

The automaker is set to unveil this breathtaking SUV at the 2020 Geneva Auto Show. Although Volkswagen hasn’t released pricing info yet, they will start accepting orders in subsequent months.
