The Toyota Fortuner is a Hilux-based midsize SUV that the Japanese automaker began producing in 2004 and it's currently sold in some continents. With the Toyota Hilux getting a facelift now, the Japanese automaker also decided to reveal a new 2021 version for the Fortuner SUV at the same time.
Meet the 2021 Toyota Fortuner SUV that is based on the same platform as the popular Hilux truck
It's easy to guess that only a few Nigerians will know that Toyota has a Hilux-based SUV called the Fortuner; the same way only a few people are aware of some 10 cool facts about Toyota that we published some time ago. But believe it or not, Toyota built the Fortuner SUV on the Hilux truck’s platform and now it has revealed a new 2021 version of the SUV with extra power and technology.
Just like Toyota added some spice to the new Hilux model, it did the same to the 2021 Fortuner SUV sibling. The new version of the mid-size SUV now comes with a beefier 2.8L turbodiesel engine that produces 201hp (150kW) and 369 lb-ft (500Nm) of torque. This is an impressive gain of 27 horsepower (20kilowatts) and 37 pound-feet (50 Newton-meters) over the previous model of the Fortuner SUV.

What’s more impressive is a massive 17% less fuel consumption of the new engine Toyota added to this 2021 Fortuner SUV despite its increased power. The automaker was able to achieve this feat by improving the cooling system for the engine. This 2021 model also offers more tower capacity compared to the previous model.
Other changes made by Toyota to this new model includes;
- Modified rear and front bumpers as well as taillights and headlights
- Bigger 8-inch infotainment touchscreen with support for Apple CarPlay and Android auto
