It was back in 2017 that Volvo promised everyone that it will be offering a Plug-in version/variant of almost every one of its vehicle models by the year 2019. The automaker has begun to fulfil its promise as the UK market now welcomes the new 2020 Volvo XC40 T5 twin-engine PHEV.

This new XC40 PHEV is Volvo’s first compact crossover in its segment and comes with a 1.5-litre 3-cylinder gas engine that delivers 178hp and 195 lb-ft of torque which is then assisted by an all-electric motor that produces 80hp and 118 pound-foot of torque. It is also the first-ever to feature the Volvo’s new 7-speed twin-clutch automatic transmission in the automaker’s modular platform-based vehicles.

This debuted XC40 SUV is also the first production vehicle to feature the Volvo’s new 7-speed twin-clutch auto transmission
Volvo’s official statements claim that the new XC40 PHEV’s drivetrain has a 258hp combined power output. This makes it the most powerful of all the vehicles in its range because the specification beats the 2.0L turbo engine featured in the previous T5 AWD model by a 14hp difference. Also, this new 2020 Volvo XC40 PHEV comes with a Front-Wheel-Drive system only and accelerates from 0 to 62mp in 7.3seconds; a meagre 0.7 seconds longer time than the previous T5 AWD version.

Impressive fuel efficiency of 2020 Volvo XC40 T5 PHEV
The foreign tax benefits and fuel consumption on this new PHEV are its major strengths. On the WLTP cycle, its preliminary gas mileage shows an impressive 112.8mpg to 141.2mpg returns (combined cycle) particularly when it's fitted with 19-inches wheels. With these wheels and in pure driving mode, the XC40 PHEV’s 10.7kWh battery can take you about 28.6miles on pure electric power alone.
By standard, this new XC40 comes with a 3-plug charging cable that can refill the battery directly from a standard outlet in about 3.5 to 6 hours. Volvo will, however, sell an extra ₦22,400 (£50) fast-charge cable that is plugged to a Type 2/Mode 3 outlet will refill the vehicle’s battery in just 2.5hours through a 3.7kW onboard charger of the system.

The new Volvo XC40 PHEV features 4 additional drive modes which are;

The version of this 2020 Volvo XC40 with hybrid powertrain will not be offered on the Momentum trim (entry-level) but rather on all the upper trims starting with the ₦18.2 million (£40,905/$50,535) sporty R-Design on-the-road trim. This model comes with a 19-inch wheel, leather seating, black exterior trim, and LED headlights.
All of the range and versions of the new Volvo XC40 T5 comes with the below standard safety kit;

- Hill-start assist
- Adaptive cruise control
The higher R-Design Pro version packs 20-inch wheels and active LED headlights among many other types of equipment at an ₦18.9 million (£42,305/$52,264) price tag.
