2020 McLaren 720S Spider Engine and Performance

Just like every other hardtop model of the McLaren, the new 2020 McLaren 720S Spider has 3 different modes of chassis and powertrain for drivability and efficiency, and they include the Track, Comfort and Sport. It was also designed with a 4.0 Liter double-turbocharged V-8 engine and a dual-clutch transmission system to make riding an enjoyable one.

This engine produces maximum power output of 710 horsepower at 7500 rpm and torque of 568 pound-feet at 6,500 rpm. The 720S spider accelerates from 0-60 in 2.8 seconds and 212 mph is also achievable as top speed. However, this reduces to 202 mph whenever the roof is folded up.

There is barely any difference between the new Spider and some of its siblings like Coupe. However, the 2020 McLaren 720S Spider is much stiffer whenever its roof is folded up because of its carbon-fiber chassis tub being without any bracing thus lowering the overall weight of the Coupe models by 108 pounds. Although, the difference in their weight does not alter or in anyways affect their abilities, as the both offer outstanding performances on road as you would expect a McLaren to.

The new 720S Spider has a very responsive steering system which makes cornering especially when on high driving speed much more convincing. The steering gives a sharp and immediate feedback when driving and also maximize the front and rear Pirelli P Zero tire grip. The efficiency of the new Spider's braking system is also magnificent. Its brake calipers on the front and rear rotors are very sensitive and bite very hard as well such that they can bring the vehicle speed from 124 miles/hour to 0 mph in just 400 ft.

The variable suspension system of 2020 McLaren 720S Spider greatly enhances its dynamic driving capability and also gives adequate feedback to the driver especially when there is change in the drive mode. The hydraulic suspension system with a rockstar chassis helps in lifting the vehicle’s nose in order to minimize and limit vibrations from rough uneven roads when driving.

The Spider is well equipped with series of standard features and equipment to make driving convenient and comfortable. Its interior design, in terms of accessibility, control, standardization, technology and efficiency stands out among its competitors.

The Spider comes with soft Nappa leather seats to give the passengers the maximum support, comfort and luxurious ambience. There is availability of an electronically control glass deflector which helps in minimizing the rate at which air blows in especially when the roof is folded up. This glass deflector can either be lowered down or raised up depending on the driver's desire. The new Spider was designed such that even when the glass deflector and side windows are completely lowered down, the rate at which wind blows in and out of the vehicle is automatically controlled.

With this design, the passenger's conversations are made more audible without need to shout or a situation where passengers struggle to hear each other. Other features include the 360 degree camera system, A-pillars for rear buttress clearance and electro chromic glass roof which clear off and automatically tint itself when controlled.

The infotainment system together with 12-surrounding sound speakers (Bowers and Wilkins sound system) equipped in the new 2020 McLaren 720S Spider gives you a special relationship to music and sound, as the sound quality is just intense. The system also has an 8-inch multimedia screen which displays realtime vehicle status, current navigation details and track telemetry.

The Spider is, unfortunately, inaccessible to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto

However, the infotainment system has got it low points, for instance, the infotainment's controls and menus are illogically arranged making it difficult to control and navigate. More so, when the roof which takes 11 seconds to stow at speed of 31 mph is folded up in bright day, The sun rays causes the screen to glare making view content difficult. As McLaren does not support vehicle to smartphone monitoring and control, this therefore makes Apple CarPlay or Android Auto control not active on the new Spider.
