Naijauto has just gotten new updates on the 2020 Land Rover Defender SUV that just debuted at the ongoing Frankfurt Motor Show.
It has been over a decade now since we last saw a completely redesigned Land Rover defender SUV being rolled out.
For all those not interested in the Jeep Wrangler and upcoming Ford Bronco and probably think that the Mercedes-Benz G-Class SUVs are too expensive, this new Defender might just be the perfect off-roader you have been waiting for.
Meet the newly debuted 2020 Land Rover Defender SUV with so much under its “sleeves”
The new 2020 Land Rover Defender packs quite a remarkable number of modern smart technologies starting from even “under the hood” all the way to the inside. It is expected to hit the auto market in a lineup of;
- Gas-powered straight-6 (plus mild-hybrid) system
- Gas-powered turbocharged 4-cylinder system
- Two diesel engines
- Also, a plug-in hybrid model is expected to be available by the year 2020

The 2020 Land Rover Defender SUV is going to hit the market with 4 different engine configurations
Using this information, we can guess the engines that will most likely come with each version as follows;
- For the two diesel engine versions – a 2.0L engine with 237hp and 317 lb-ft of torque
- For the gas-powered versions – a 2.0L turbocharged engine with 296hp and 295 lb-ft of torque (this is an engine that the Defender shares with the PHEV Range Rover, E-Pace and the Range Rover Evoque
- For the most powerful defender version – a 3.0L straight-6 engine could be possibly matched with an electric motor (using permanent magnet) and a Li-ion battery pack to produce a 394hp combined power and 406 pound-foot of torque. This combo will achieve a 5.8 seconds acceleration time from 0 – 60mph in the bigger Land Rover Defender 110 and 5.7seconds in the Defender 90.
And the 8-speed automatic transmission should work pretty well in a setup with any of these engines. This gearbox will definitely be shuttling power to an all-wheel-drive system which will be permanent and should be amplified by a standard 2-speed transfer case. In such a setup, the 2020 Defender should get the Land Rover’s excellent Terrain Response 2 system together with an auto-locking rear differential and a manually-locking centre differential. This impressive package will even become much more capable with an air suspension system option.
This new 2020 Land Rover Defender will also come with 11.5-inches maximum ground clearance for the 110 and a 35.4-inches maximum wading depth advantage when in water/flooded terrain. It also shares the Evoque experience with its newly added ClearSight GroundView system as well. This is just one bit of the new advanced technologies featured in this 2020 Defender.

The best of the modern “vibes” in this new Defender SUV comes from the addition of the all-new Pivi Pro infotainment system as well as standard OTA software updates too. With this addition, the new SUV feels more alive just like its competitors as the Pivi Pro system’s Always-On feature means that once you fire up this new Defender, the infotainment system is up and running instantly via the added 10.0-inch touch display. The system is also promised to be easier to use and faster than it has ever been.
The 2020 Land Rover Defender 90 is said to be hitting the market with space capable of accommodating 6 people while the Defender 110 will come with either a 5-plus-2 seat configuration or a 5-seat config. Both versions are said to feature a front-row bench and the backrest of their middle jump seats will be foldable in a forward manner to be usable as a mini cupholder or even flipped up such to comfortably accommodate an extra passenger.
This 2020 Land Rover Defender SUV is now ready for competition with its newly added modern infotainment system
Land Rover even brought much more enticing packages with this new 2020 Defender SUV with so many accessories enough to win the heart of a Jeep fan/customer. The 2020 Defender is said to be entering the market with 4 preset packs with over 170 available accessories when it finally launches.
These packages aren’t just coming with wheel caps and decals, rather the 2020 Land Rover Defender’s explorer pack alone is stated to have;
- a roof rack,
- raised air intake,
- a crazy-neat side gear carrier that will look like “saddlebags” draping over the SUV’s rear side windows
Also, those customers that prefer even more capability will be provided with additional types of body protection and roof ladder.
The Defender’s Adventure Package will feature;
- side-mounted carriers
- air compressor
- and 6.5-litre water reservoir that will have a shower attachment and a hose.
And the Country Pack is stated to have a rinse system and interior storage partitions, while the Defender’s Urban Package is said to mainly focus on aesthetics which includes a special cover for the SUV’s attached spare wheel.
2020 Land Rover Defender - First Look
Land Rover is yet to announce the official pricing for each of these packages and versions of the 2020 Defender SUV except for the 5-door Defender 110 which is expected to hit the auto market in the United States by mid-2020 with an ₦18 million ($49,900) starting price.
With all of the above details and even more that are yet to be revealed from a later drive experience, we can boldly say that this new 2020 Land Rover Defender SUV is definitely one to be on the lookout for in the coming year.
