The all new BMW X1 has been refreshed for just a bit with just a few other changes obvious here and there. Prominent among them is the Kidney shaped Grill that merges at the center. See more inside!

BMW has never relented in remaining competitive, they have continually dished out some really top class vehicles. Very recently they engineered the launch of the X7 and now the 2020 X1 is in the offing. The BMW X1 has not disappointed in the market since its launch in 2009, it has remained as competitive as ever and may appear as though it may not require an upgrade. However, as is the custom, an upgrade is executed after every 4 years and that is what BMW has done with the company’s smallest SUV, the 2020 BMW X1 which is coming to the public later in the year.

1. Exterior

The all new BMW X1 has been refreshed for just a bit. The most retouched area is the front end exterior which now sports a new and much larger distinct kidney grille. The new grill meets at the center in contracts to previous designs that were more of two single piece grills. The rear end of the X1 looks virtually the same like its predecessor except for the changes in the tail lights and the paint coloring for the underbody protection of the rear apron which now comes in shiny black color.

A few other changes are obvious all over the car; the front bumpers now enjoy more chrome finishing and a stronger look. It also comes with redesigned LED headlamps and fog lights which gives it a high Tech frontal look. There is considerable alteration is the size of the tail pipe of the 2020 BMW X1 when compared to its predecessor. The new BMW X1 facelift sports a 20mm increase in tail pipe size bringing it up to 90mm current size. The change in the twin tail pipe size serves to accommodate the TwinPower turbocharged engine with similar performance specs to its predecessor.

The all new BMW X1 comes with some new paint colors including the Misano Blue, Jucaro Beige and Storm Bay which complement the new wheel designs. The new wheel designs include the 19-inch 816M style for light alloy steel, the 18-inch 578 and 579 light alloy wheel style for xLine Trim and the 19-inch 580 alloy wheel style for the M sport Trim.

2. Transmission

The 2020 X1 will sport an 8-speed Steptronic automatic transmission which BMW says has been redesigned with a new gear ratio, as well as a different electronic unit which manages the gear shift of the Steptronic transmission system. BMW says these changes makes the X1 match the rest of the BMW family and will improve the overall performance of the car.

3. Engine

The engine area has also received a boost. Two new diesel and petrol engine are introduced, with the xDrive16d and the xDrive25d being the new diesel offerings. The xDrive16d is a 2.0 liter, 3 cylinder 150 hp engine that delivers 475 lbs-ft torque that comes with either an 8-speed automatic transmission or a 6-speed manual transmission system. On the other hand, the xDrive25d is a 2.0 liter diesel engine that delivers 190 hp from its inline 4 cylinder engine. This engine comes equipped with an 8- speed automatic transmission as standard. The other two new petrol engines are they xDrive20i and the xDrive18i which offer 190 hp and 140 hp respectively. But the highest petrol engine offering for X1 will be the xDrive25i which is a 4-cylinder turbocharged engine.

The 2020 BMW X1 will also get a hybrid engine that will come in by next year. This engine with designation xDrive25e will be a 125 hp, 1.5 liter 3-cylinder turbocharged engine that will produce 162 lb-ft torque to power the front axle of the hybrid X1. The xDrive25e will be combined with 2 electric motors with a joint output of 95 hp and 162 lb-foot torque powering the rear axle.

4. Interior and Infotainment

The X1 facelift comes with the latest BMW iDrive infotainment system which sports a 9-inch multimedia touchscreen that can be upgraded to a 10-inch multimedia screen if desired. The BMW X1 also comes with the heads-up display feature which displays critical information on your windshield, thus reducing the chances of you taking your eyes off the road while driving. The BMW iDrive system supports the Apple CarPlay and other Navigation capabilities.

The BMW X1 interior décor remains almost the same as its predecessor with very minor alterations here and there.  The door panels and lower dashboard areas are excellently upgraded and finished with matching leather materials and you will also notice contrasting stitchings on the floor mats and instrument panel.

5. Review Verdict

Overall it’s just there with only a few tweaks but no much exciting. However, it’s still the sophisticating BMW SUV. The X1 has always been a darling and should remain so with these minor changes. I’ll generously give it 3.0/5.0
