As usual, is here again with another exclusive first drive review and this time we have picked the 2019 Mercedes-Benz A 220 compact sedan that is currently eyed by most Nigerians.

First, it should be noted that this new A 220 is not a CLA replacement at all. The CLA differs as it is a 4-door coupe but this new A 220 is a proper and true sedan. You might argue that they are indeed similar in some ways – both front-drive based 4-doors below the Mercedes C-Class – although, the CLA will surely stay around more, analogous to the E-Class and CLS situation.

Here is the much eyed 2019 Mercedes-Benz A 220 compact sedan

2019 Mercedes-Benz A 220 – The Exterior

This new A-Class actually comes with a smooth and clean styling; few character creases, but then every other thing seems to be an exercise plainly in reduction.

The rear of this new sedan seems to have more conventional pertness, a type of short overhang that doesn’t have the droop which was present in all the bigger C-Class Mercedes. The 2019 Mercedes-Benz A 220’s headlights are more angular and they seem more flashily direct into a nicely upright fascia.

2019 Mercedes-Benz A 220 – The Interior

A quick overview of the Premium Package loaded A 220’s interior tells a lot of more interesting things about the new sedan.

It consisted of an ultra-contemporary mix of texture and colour. When you dive the sedan into a tunnel or at night, you get to see the beautiful ambient lights, metallic backlit eyeball vents, and its nice dual screens that will all be screaming for your attention. It’s more of awe and shock with a pure whiff of a nice Virgin Atlantic Cabin – which is sparkly just like a fishing lure to really hook most buyers.

What it feels like inside the new 2019 Mercedes-Benz A 220 – Won’t you love to ride this?

This new A 220 sedan has an interior space that is mostly dominated by the brand’s MBUX infotainment sort of experience and its optional 10.25-inch clear screens (the dual 7-inch screens come as standard). The screen on the right-hand has now been made a touchscreen and it comes with a small touchpad located on the centre console of the car with two small thumb controls provided on the car’s steering wheel serving as alternate sort of interfaces.

The car’s other interface is actually aural – just audibly say “Hey Mercedes” and it will simply ask you directly what you wish to do. In fact, say just about anything and then add the word “Mercedes” – things like “that Mercedes” or “My Mercedes” – and watch the system perk up, with the hope that you will ask it to actually do something it can.

Some interior details of the new 2019 Mercedes-Benz A 220 – it’s a Mercedes thing, right?

What this interface can do is theoretically just ambitious. It embeds technology like Cloud-based Processing and Natural Language Recognition which allows you to request for things like “the top-rated restaurants nearby with hamburger” or any other naturally complex query, and the system will actually parse this command and get you matching recommendations/options.

2019 Mercedes-Benz A 220 – The engine power

You might not really get so much emphasis on the mechanicals of this new A 220 because it's not really as flashy as its tech-intensive type of interior experience which you will get.

This new sedan comes with a 2.0L turbocharged inline-4 engine that is rated to deliver 188hp and 221 lb-ft of torque which makes the new A 220 just swift but not so thrilling – and even a bit less powerful compared to the Mercedes-Benz CLA 250.

Its 7-Speed transaxle direct sends power to its all of its wheels in the 4Matic guise and to the front wheels in other standard versions. The new A 220 has a wheel-mounted type of shift paddles, although they are based on the slow type of response and with a tendency to even second-guess what the driver’s inputs are, it might just be best to let it fend for itself automatically.

2019 Mercedes-Benz A 220 prices in Nigeria

The pricing of this new A 220 is yet to be announced officially but giving the fact that the CLA 250 is roughly ₦11.8 million ($33,000) in starting price, we expect this new A 220 sedan to actually start below that price.

What do we think of the 2019 Mercedes-Benz A 220?

We believe that this new sedan surely has a very slim competition in its segment. Yes, considering that the Audi A3 actually comes with a sort of minimalistic appeal, and a neat Virtual Cockpit but this new A 220 brings as much as 20.5-inches of the screen to really show off. Judging based on Mechanics; we can call this a draw although the new A 220 sedan is not significantly bigger than the Audi A3.

BMW as well does not really have a competitor for this new A 220 even though their 2 Series might somehow be close.

But overall, we see this new 2019 Mercedes-Benz A 220 compact sedan to be really making greater waves.
