Angry youths in Abia state burn police patrol vehicles to protest the death of a young man shot by a drunk police officer
Just last week in this same Abia State, we published a report of a “Trigger Happy” NSCDC officer that allegedly shot dead a commercial bus driver. In this fresh report; Ene Okon – the Commissioner of Police in Abia state, frowned at this recent killing as he vowed that the police officers involved will be charged for murder in court as they have already been arrested. He said, there was no way he would allow policemen on duty or off duty get involved in this type of detestable act and still go scot-free.
The Commissioner of Police also mentioned that this report makes the 4th case of such an incident in Abia state involving security agents since the announcement of a COVID-19 lockdown by the state government 2 weeks ago.
Narrating this last incident, reports have it that 3 police officers (one corporal and two sergeants) who were off duty went to have some fun at a drinking joint in the Ebem Ohafia area of Abia State. After drinking to their satisfaction until around 11 pm in the night, they headed home in one of their own private cars. Unfortunately, these allegedly drunk policemen hit a young man’s car while the man was offloading beverages into his personal store.
According to some sources, the drunk officers did not apologize to the young man but instead harassed him and everyone around the area at that time of the incident. This harassment reportedly led to an altercation between the young man and the police officers which led to one of them pulling the trigger on him. Seeing this entire drama play out till the death of the innocent young man, made youths of the area begin a violent protest in which they burnt the patrol vans of the police and a DPO’s car.
While all this is happening in Abia state during the COVID-19 lockdown, Nigerians are still reacting to the death of Abba Kyari caused by Coronavirus infection. See the video below of some people’s reactions;
