Believe it or not, you will never be able to go faster than 112mph in any Volvo car you buy from now on. Yes, if you are the type that likes to over-speed once in a while on a rarely-used country road, this might not be good news for you. However, it is for the greater good of humanity because 112 mph (180km/h) is higher than the speed limit in most countries all over the world except on certain tracks in Germany.
New Volvo cars will now come with a 112mph electronically-limited top speed to reduce speed-related crashes
For quite some time now, Volvo has been promising that regardless of the target market, body style, horsepower, or drivetrain type – it will limit the top speed of its cars electronically to a fixed rating. This promise is now being fulfilled with the company’s recent announcement revealing that all of its new car models will have a 112 mph electronically-limited top speed.
According to Volvo, this new development will take effect from May this year. The company explained that the number was not chosen randomly but instead carefully picked because it conveniently exceeds the speed limit in most countries all over the world. This decision must have been a tough one for the Swedish automaker because it once brought it up in 2019 and it led to several controversies. A number of people believe speed limiting by automakers violates their individual speed rights while others praise the idea as an extra safety measure.
Volvo has now disclosed that it painstakingly examined the two schools of thought and ultimately decided that the safety side wins.
New “Care Key” feature will allow you to set any custom top speed (below 112mph) in your new Volvo car
Apart from the new 112mph standard top speed for all new Volvo cars, the automaker has also announced that its new cars will come with an extra speed-limiting feature called “Care Key”. This new feature allows a user to even lower the speed limit below 112 mph if need be. Volvo believes this feature will come in handy when parents hand over their cars to a teenager or anyone borrowing out his/her car and needs to ensure speed limit is obeyed by the 3rd party driver.
