Seven children have gone missing after a vehicle conveying 29 passengers plunged into a canal in Northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.
The police report said they've been able to rescue 22 persons from the canal and the search for the remaining 7, which is believed to be children was underway.

Naijauto gathered that the accident occurred early in the morning, in Nagram area, on the outer part of Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh.
"Early this morning a vehicle carrying 29 people fell into Indira canal.The passengers in the vehicle were returning from a wedding when the driver lost control over the vehicle before plunging into canal.
So far 22 people mostly adults were rescued alive but as per the information seven children aged between four and nine years are still missing
A team of national disaster response force (NDRF) has been deployed for rescue operations and divers are searching inside the canal."

A police official who was there stated that when the vehicle plunged into the canal, local residents immediately swung into action to rescue the passengers and then informed the police.

Rescuers said the water in the canal has a strong current which is restraining their efforts.
Police officials at the scene feared the children may have drowned inside the canal.
"It has been several hours and there is no trace of the children, there is possibility they might have died, the police official said. We have directed the official in districts downstream to put nets into the canal so that if the children had been swept away by the currents, they could be recovered."
Indian is known to have a high record of ghastly road accidents and according to reports, are caused by the poor state of the road, reckless driving, and overloading.
An official report confirmed that 400 deaths due to road accidents are recorded on a daily basis in Indian.
