Nothing lasts forever – this is a popular saying engraved in the hearts of many. But everyone hopes that the change is for the better. Sadly, the change happened for the worse in the case of Hakan Sukur who is the highest goal scorer in Turkish football history.

The former football star now drives a taxi for a living in the U.S.

In an interview with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), Sukur, 48, revealed that his life took a downfall following an issue with the Turkish president, Tayyip Erodogan. Sukur stated that, after his retirement from professional football, he was falsely accused, refused access to his money, and issued death threats. Left with no choice, he left his country for the United States to start all over.

Sukur is famous for scoring no fewer than 51 goals during his 112 match appearances from 1992 to 2007. Although he had a stint with English club Blackburn, he spent the most part of his football career playing for Galatasaray – a club in his home country. To this day, he is the highest goal scorer in his country’s Super Lig. Sukur’s woes began after he got involved in politics. According to him, the Turkish president is responsible for his downfall.
