Despite having strong contenders like the Volkswagen ID 3 and Land Rover Defender SUV, the 4th-generation Toyota Yaris has recently bagged the “2021 European Car of the Year” award. The Japanese automaker, Toyota, was reportedly handed this prestigious award on Monday 1st of March after deliberations by a panel of 59 different journalists from over 22 countries in Europe.

According to media sources, the Toyota Yaris surprisingly won this highly-coveted title after contending against other popular car models like the VW ID.3, Skoda Octavia, Land Rover Defender, Fiat 500, Citroën C4, and the Cupra Formentor. Similarly, the Peugeot 208 which took home the award last year is now being succeeded by the latest Toyota Yaris subcompact car.

- Toyota Yaris (WINNER) – 266 points
- Fiat 500 electric (1st Runner Up) – 240 points
- Cupra Formentor (2nd Runner Up) – 239 points

This European Car of the Year title means a lot to many automakers because it helps them proof the “worth” of their nominated car models.
