Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, running Nigerian First Republic in its very first stage, had used this car to travel throughout the country.

Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe (16 November 1904 – 11 May 1996) whose full name is Chief Benjamin Nnamdi Azikiwe, PC, PhD, was the first President of Nigeria between 1963 and 1966. During his presidency, Volkswagen Beetle was always the car he trusted for outside trips.

Being honored as “Father of Nigerian Nationalism”, when Nnamdi Azikiwe died of serious illness, the whole country had mourned his death and paid their tribute to his contributions. New York Times once cited his “rare status of a truly national hero” for the power to unite all “regional and ethnic lines” divided throughout the country.

Below are precious pictures of his Volkswagen in 1959.
