Tragedy struck yesterday on the Enugu-Onitsha expressway when a tanker explosion fire killed two persons in Anambra State. The horrifying incident reportedly occurred during the morning hours of Tuesday, May 24 in Umunya, Oyi LGA. An eyewitness claimed that a gas-laden tanker suffered a tyre burst and crashed into an oncoming shuttle bus. The collision between the bus and the tanker resulted in a massive explosion and fire outbreak that ravaged the area.

Dr Martin Agbili, the director of Fire Service in Anambra State has confirmed this tragic incident as he claims that two persons died in the tanker fire. He revealed that the agency got a distress call around 8:40 am yesterday about a gas-laden tanker that suffered a tyre burst. Firefighters were immediately deployed to the scene of the incident where the tanker explosion had already started a huge fire. The State fire service claimed that they were able to quench the fire at around 11:30 am with no further casualties recorded.

As of the time of writing this report, the identity of the people that died in the recent tanker explosion fire in Anambra State has not been revealed. The State fire service has however confirmed that only two casualties were recorded. Similarly, the fire outbreak was reportedly curbed and completely put out before the firefighters left the incident scene yesterday. The extent of damage caused by this fire incident wasn’t revealed in the news report but it seems not so much. Meanwhile, residents confirmed that the incident occurred around Odumodu Junction on the popular Enugu-Onitsha road.
