The current Sultan of Sokoto is Alhaji Muhammadu Sa'ad Abubakar
His lineage is traced back to Usman Dan Fodio, the founder of the Sokoto Caliphate. Dan Fodio was the first Sultan of Sokoto and he was a Fulani religious teacher and military leader. He was more of a scholar than a ruler so he gave the western part of his empire to his brother Abdullahi dan Fodio. His son Muhammed Bello took over the eastern part and was made the second Sultan of Sokoto in 1815. Abdullahi, Usman Dan Fodio's brother claimed their family was part Fulani and part Arab who descended through Uqba ibn Nafi. He was said to be an Arab Muslim who married a Fulani woman called Bajjumangbu. And from her came Usman Dan Fodio's descendant. In his book titled Infaq al-Mansur, Caliph Muhammed Bello claimed to be a descent of Prophet Muhammad through Usman Dan Fodio's mother called Hawwa. Interestingly enough, Alhaji Muhammadu, the Wazirin of Sokoto and a foremost scholar on Fulani history reiterated Abdullahi dan Fodio's claim of their family being part Fulani and part Arab. This historical account showed how the Dan Fodio descent came about and the fact that they were culturally absorbed by the Hausa tribe. They are now referred to as Hausa-Fulani Arabs.
