We often iterate here why excessive speed put the lives of motorists and other road users at huge risk. Such was the tragic incident that happened recently when a speeding SUV hit and crushed a 17-year-old schoolgirl last Wednesday in Rivers State.

According to report from a reliable source, the young girl, who was a student of Community Secondary School in Rumuapara, was her on a way to school in the morning when this tragedy struck.

Michael Anyanwu, who happens to be one the victim’s guardians, revealed to the press that the girl was trying to cross the road when she was crushed by the speeding SUV at around 8:05 am. He further added that the attempt to rescue the girl by rushing her to the Teaching Hospital in Port Harcourt proved nothing as she was confirmed dead by the doctor on duty.

This unfortunate incident was confirmed by one Nnamdi Omoni, who is the spokesman for the state police command. There is little doubt if the police command currently has information on the Sport Utility Vehicle that cut short the life of a young girl in the state, considering it was hit and run.
Meanwhile, it was a different fate entirely for the driver and conductor of a truck that crushed five schoolchildren in Ebonyi, where they both lost their lives in a mob attack.
