Naturally, you would think that social media apps are designed for people to chat, have fun and do business online, right? Well, the sad reality is that we live in a world today where some people usually take social media too seriously and they can do anything for the “Likes” and attention. This is exactly the case with the “Speed Filter” feature that has now been dropped from the popular social media app, Snapchat. Yes, this feature was removed following several reports of people losing their lives because the “Speed Filter” feature allegedly incited them to drive recklessly.
Popular social media app, Snapchat finally drops its “Speed Filter” feature because of reports that it incites reckless driving
Sometimes in 2013, Snap INC introduced the “Speed Filter” feature in its popular social media app – Snapchat. This feature uses the inbuilt camera and sensors of a mobile phone to calculate and project the speed information of a user on the screen of his/her phone. The feature became a viral sensation among the young folks using Snapchat as they literally started sharing photos of their speed information while driving a car, riding a bike, or riding on an aeroplane. Unfortunately, it wasn’t far too long before several reports began to reveal that many people were getting killed in car crashes because they were driving at unreasonably high speed just to make the Snapchat Speed Filter show their “insane” speed information in photos.
