Self-driving Uber accident update: police reveals footage of the collision

The police chief believes there’s no actual evidence to claim Uber should take the responsibility for the crash.

The police just revealed footage showing the accident that stole the life of a cyclist by an Uber taxi in self-driving mode on March 18.

In the video, the driver showed no reaction until he could realize the sound and the impact of the collision.

From the footage, it can be seen that the driver was looking down for some seconds right before the accident. Later she said the incident came too sudden and when the person crossing, the only sign to her was the sound of the crash.

Though the emergency came up not long after the incident to take the victim to the hospital, she could not survive.

The incident has led to the suspension of Uber on its autonomous program. Meanwhile, concerning the Uber incident may exert an emotional effect on their test drivers, Toyota also put off its self- driving tests.

At the moment, the Department of Tempe Police is still investigating the accident.

The police chief does not believe Uber would be blamed

Following the analysis of the videos, the police chief believes there’s no actual evidence to claim Uber should take the responsibility for the crash.

He said in a statement that it was very difficult to avoid the collision whether or not the car was being driven in self-driving mode given how sudden the pedestrian came out from the dark right in front of the car.

Further investigations will be made but the police chief does not believe Uber would be blamed, adding that he won't exclude the possibility to bring charges against the back-up driver.
