The Ogun State TRACE (Traffic Compliance & Enforcement Corps) has confirmed in its latest report that a total of 176 persons lost their lives last year in various road accidents across the state. The Corps made this confirmation on Monday, January 25 while reporting to several local media correspondents in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun state.
The latest press reports of the Ogun State TRACE confirm that a total of 176 people died in various car accidents in 2020
According to DAILY POST online newspaper, the 2020 traffic report by Ogun State TRACE shows that 852 road accidents occurred in the state last year. Similarly, it shows the following statistics for types of vehicles involved in the accidents:
- Heavy-duty trucks – 169
- Medium-sized trucks – 155
- Tricycles (Keke NAPEP) – 52
- Motorcycles – 101
- Commercial cars – 189
- Commercial buses – 168
- Private transport buses – 153
- Private cars – 171
- Other vehicles (Uncategorized) – 93

New press reports also state that the spokesman for Ogun State TRACE, Babatunde Akinbiyi confirmed that a total of 3,021 persons were victims of these road crashes between Jan and Dec 2020. However, only 176 persons lost their lives while 990 survived with varying degree of injuries and a total of 1,855 people escaped unhurt. Mr Babatunde Akinbiyi also revealed that the majority of the car crashes were caused by either one or more of the following reasons:
- Mechanical faults
- Bad roads
- Driving against traffic
- Bad tyres
- Dangerous (reckless) driving
It was also stated in the TRACE reports that the agency impounded 346 motorcycles and 1,650 vehicles last year for various traffic offences and traffic rule violations.
