Highlighting the common rebadged cars that we don't know about.

Everyone knows that Lexus is owned by Toyota but we don't see a Lexus model that looks completely similar to a Toyota model because they are both different in their own little way. Meanwhile, there are some car models that are completely similar to a pre-existing car model and they are called rebadged/rebranded cars.

Meaning of rebranded/rebadged cars

Rebranded meaning: Badge engineering is a practice of applying a different logo, name, badge, or trademark to an existing product and selling it as a distinct product. Cars that are badge engineered are referred to as rebranded/rebadged cars.

The reason automakers practice rebranding of cars is just to save themselves from having to fully redesign new cars for production that would then be sold to their consumers. The extent of rebranding varies depending on the purpose/plan of the rebadging taking place.

In the video below, you will be shocked to find out some cars are rebranded:

This article highlights cars that have been badge-engineered and the story behind the rebranding.

7 popular re-branded cars in Nigeria!

1. Acura TSX /Honda Accord (2004 - 2008)

Acura is a subsidiary of Honda but it still produces distinct cars for the American/European market. The 2004-2008 Acura TSX is originally a 2002- 2008 Honda Accord Euro branded car.

The TSX was rebranded for sale in the American market, although the Accord still had the Asian spec that was very popular in Nigeria as "end of discussion".

The TSX and Accord, however, were slightly different in the interior design. This rebadging also repeated itself between 2009-2014 model of the TSX.

2. Chrysler Crossfire/ Mercedes-Benz SLK R170

The 2 door sports coupe Crossfire by Chrysler was developed and designed during the period when Daimler-Benz had the ownership of Chrysler Automotive between 1998 - 2004. The Crossfire design was based on the Mercedes-Benz SLK R170 platform.

The Crossfire shares 80% of its component with the Mercedes-Benz SLK but you would never easily notice. The Crossfire's appearance was engineered to look very different from the SLK. Components like headlights, taillights, and body panels are different but every other component we can't easily see are different.

The Crossfire is one of those cars that look faster than they really are running on a Mercedes-Benz 3.2L V6 engine that the R170 SLK also used.

3. Subaru BRZ/ Toyota GT86

The Toyota GT86 is a 2 door sports coupe that Toyota & Subaru jointly developed in 2011/2012. Subaru rebranded the GT86 and sold it under the BRZ trademark with almost a 100% similarity in the exterior.

The most identical models in car history

There were little differences in the grille and front bumper styling. Also, there is a little difference in the interior styling of both cars. The most obvious difference being the steering wheel design.

Before the Coronavirus pandemic, Toyota increased its stake in Subaru to 20% because it needed the collaboration with Subaru to produce cars for the new era of automobiles. Subaru has a strong knowledge-base in cars with electric power and all-wheel-drive systems.

Some believe that the GT86 looks sportier than the BRZ, but all the time I look at both cars, in the exterior, they are one and the same.

4.GMC Yukon/Chevrolet Tahoe

General Motors has always been known for offering two versions of the same car. The cars are differentiated by branding and marketing strategies.
The Chevrolet Tahoe and the GMC Yukon are one and the same full-size bully SUVs, the only area where the SUVs differ is the exterior.

The two General Motor flagship full-size SUVs

The Tahoe looks more rugged than the Yukon, they also both differ in headlights and grille styling.

The difference on the interior is just the logo on the steering. The similarity is just like that of an identical set of twins. They both offer the same 5.3 liter V8 base engine paired to a 6-speed automatic transmission.

The interior of both SUVs, similar right?

Do you want a very durable SUV that has an enormous interior cargo space? That's what these two SUVs are built for. Long road trips require a special set of driving skills and requirements. They also require comfortable cars like the Yukon/Tahoe type of branded cars especially in Nigeria's hot weather during the day.

5. Vauxhall/Opel

Vauxhall is an exclusive UK automobile car brand that was recently bought by PSA Groupe together with Opel from General Motors and it's on this list because I have seen a couple of Vauxhall cars in Nigeria.

When Vauxhall and Opel were controlled by General motors in 1980, all Vauxhall cars sold in the UK were rebranded, meaning Opel branded cars rebadged as Vauxhall. The Rebranding is in both the interior and exterior, so when PSA took ownership of both Opel and Vauxhall in 2017 they didn't stop this rebadging culture.

The common models being rebadged and sold by Vauxhall are Corsa, Astra, Insignia, and Meriva.

6.Toyota Matrix/ Pontiac Vibe

Toyota seems to be one of the automakers that have done the most collaborative "new car developing" with other automakers. If you have never noticed the striking resemblance between the Pontiac Vibe and the Toyota Matrix it's because you haven't been in both of them.

Pontiac Vibe VS Toyota Matrix

They both have a totally similar interior but the exterior makes you doubt the authenticity of the rebadging story.

The similar interior of the Vibe and Matrix

Both the Matrix and the Vibe were sold from 2002 till 2010 the production got killed. They are both very common in Nigeria as close substitutes to each other.

7. Inosson G80/BAIC BJ80

Nigeria's Innoson is not missing on this list! there is a striking resemblance between Innoson's flagship G-Wagon look-alike G80 and the BAIC BJ80.  However, a Naijauto post cleared the air on this issue and pointed out a Wikipedia report that states that the G80 by Inosson is a rebadged BJ80 that is meant for sale in Nigeria.

The two SUVs are very similar, from the interior down to the exterior as you can see from the pictures below.

Not a single difference as you can see!

Rebadging cars is clearly not a bad practice. Automakers that don't want to rebadge cars always copy the design of existing cars and then they become unfriendly rivals in the market. We can clearly see that Aston Martin copied the Mustang in the late 1980s with the Aston Martin V8 Vantage when they could have just rebadged a Mustang and named it "Vantage".
