Reputable media sources have confirmed a recent “disturbing” report of FRSC personnel claiming they were attacked by some trigger-happy policemen driving against traffic in Lagos state. According to the accounts of the attacked FRSC personnel, the incident occurred at Ibafo on Monday 14th of December along the popular Lagos-Ibadan expressway. The FRSC officers claim that some policemen attacked and threatened them with guns just because they tried to stop the police officers from driving against traffic. To even make the matters worse, one of the attacked FRSC officers also alleged that the unruly policemen also smashed his phone while he was trying to record the incident.

When reacting to this news, Dr Boboye Oyeyemi, the national Corps Marshal of FRSC, vowed that he will make sure all the “offending” policemen are brought to book. He also revealed that the offending policemen were official escorts of some VIPs; however, he would still make sure they are punished. Reports claim that Dr Oyeyemi did not disclose the names of the unruly policemen but he acknowledged the fact that they pointed guns to the FRSC officers who were just doing jobs. Dr Oyeyemi reportedly promised to prosecute these police officers for assault and traffic violation.
The Lagos state FRSC sector commander, Olusegun Ogungbemide has also made his stance in support of taking legal action against the police officers that attacked his men. Olusegun Ogungbemide reportedly confirmed the statements of the FRSC Corps Marshal and also declared his support for the decision made.

Having to read such reports like this one is highly disappointing because the Nigerian police are supposed to lead a good example for citizens to follow. Unfortunately, the reverse is the case in this scenario, however, it is still no excuse for us to begin violating traffic rules and regulations. As a matter of fact, the Federal Road Safety Corps has already begun a new campaign for “conscious” driving during these Ember months and festive period.
