The Peugeot family has recently indicated their interest in the acquisition/merger with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA). Read the full gist here now!

We are getting a lot of updates on merger possibilities and auto company acquisitions lately on to an extent that we believe some auto companies are losing face in this 2019 compared to others.

The gist this time around is about one of the PSA Group’s major stakeholder – Peugeot family which are currently showing interest in supporting a merger or acquisition with FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) as they keep pointing to the previous success of the Vauxhall-Opel purchase.

The PSA Group currently comprises of Peugeot, Vauxhall-Opel, DS and Citroen.

Carlos Tavares, the PSA group’s boss has initially made it clear that he is really interested in merging with or acquiring more auto brands to the group. The group’s recent potential target brands include Jeep, Maserati, Fiat, and Alfa-Romeo.

PSA show obvious interest in merging with FCA automobile business

The Peugeot family through its holdings’ company FFP is a major shareholder in the PSA Group.

Robert Peugeot, the FFP chairman during a recent interview a newspaper company “Les Echos” was asked to speak more about this potential merger or acquisition with/of FCA, he said; “With them, as with others, the planets could be aligned.”

Any frequent Naijauto reader will be aware that the Indian Tata group-owned auto brand – Jaguar Land Rover has been struggling recently. It is no surprise now from other updates we got that the PSA Group have also started showing interest in this auto brand.

While Robert said that there are currently no deals in place yet, the brand itself claims that the “exceptional success” of its 2016 Vauxhall-Opel purchase from GM motors is what makes the family be gearing up for a similar move again.

In the above-mentioned newspaper interview, Robert added that;

“We supported the Opel project from the start,”

“If another opportunity comes up, we will not be braking.”

Going back in history, we can see that PSA has long been interested in having a deal with FCA. It is more obvious in 2015 when Tavares ruled out such a move and compelled them to focus more on the Vauxhall-Opel deal which was indeed a success later on. It is possible for now that Peugeot family will be having their main focus on this FCA deal alone while suspending or ruling out moves on other auto brands that they also have interest in.

It is worth mentioning that in the past, PSA and FCA have collaborated on commercial vehicles development projects. So, this recent PSA Group’s interest in the FCA can be perfectly understood to be have been influenced by FCA’s strong presence especially in the North America regions which is primarily because of their Ram and Jeep.

PSA, however, has been said to be currently making efforts to re-launch “Peugeot” in the United States. If this FCA deal falls through, then the company will be able to easily get infrastructural access and dealership in those regions. What a nice game plan that PSA has with this FCA deal proposition. They are literally trying to “kill many birds with one big stone” like a Nigerian adult will say. We do hope they have plan B and plan C to fall in if the deal doesn’t fall through.

The Peugeot Family has long been interested in striking a deal with FCA since 2015

Mike Manley the FCA boss on the other hand at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show told some Italian reporters that he is very much “open” to cooperating with other automobile firms, he says he doesn’t mind;

 “whether it’s partnerships, joint ventures or deeper levels of equity cooperation that makes sense for us and whoever that is”.

Now that FCA boss obviously claims to be “open” and PSA group is showing serious interest in them, we hope to see what comes out of the entire drama latest ending of this year 2019.
