Oprah Winfrey biography
Oprah Gail Winfrey was born January 29, 1954, on a remote farm in Kosciusko, Mississippi, to her parents Vernita Lee and Vernon Winfrey. Her biblical name was Orpah, but due to the difficulties of spelling and pronunciation, she was referred to as Oprah nearly from the start. Soon after her birth, Winfrey's parents divorced, leaving her in the custody of her mum’s mother on the farm.
A rough childhood
Winfrey used to amuse herself as a child by "acting" in front of an "audience" of farm animals. She learned to read at an early age under the constant supervision of her grandmother. When she was two years old, she spoke to the congregation at her church on "Jesus resurrection on Easter day."
Then, on the first day of classes, Winfrey missed kindergarten, writing a letter to her teacher stating she did belong in first grade. After that year, she was promoted to the third grade.
Winfrey was taken to the north at the age of six to live with her mother and her two stepbrothers in a Milwaukee ghetto, a poor and unsafe neighbourhood.
She claims she was abused as a child and early adolescent, and that she became pregnant at the age of 14; her son was born premature and died at birth. Winfrey was sent to live with Vernon Winfrey, a barber in Tennessee, whom she refers to as her dad, and secured a job in radio and was still in high school.
