Despite coming through the ranks of Ajax youth academy, Simon also attended the GBS Academy, the football school that produced Ahmed Musa. The Nigerian star was earlier linked with Kaduna United, a club in the top division of the Nigerian Premier League. Simon eventually chose the Dutch side in 2013 to join them in preseason training.
