The mob burns truckload of rice that rammed into market stalls from brake failure, killing 16 people and leaving several others injured in Ondo State.

A report is just reaching us here concerning the unfortunate incident that happened in Ondo over the weekend. From what we learnt, an angry mob allegedly set a truckload of rice on fire after the truck was responsible for the death of 16 people and several injuries in an accident around the Ibaka area of Akungba Akoko in Akoko West Local Government of the state.

Tragedy struck as a truckload of rice experienced brake failure and rammed into stalls at the market in Ondo

From the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) report, the truck was conveying several bags of rice before it went out of control and rammed into the nearby market stalls where it killed 16 people in the area. Also, when the truckload of rice suffered from the brake failure, it crashed a Toyota Corolla, Toyota Camry and 3 motorcycles.

As a result, the disaster created by the truck infuriated the youths living the town, who attempted to burn down the truck with bags of rice in it. However, the men of the Nigerian Army came into rescue as they prevented the youths from creating more havoc at the scene of the accident. To show their frustration, the youths in the area halted the movement of vehicles through the town for hours by blocking the Ikare Akoko-Owo Expressway.

In the midst of civil unrest in the country following several road mishaps and violent activities of some hoodlums, remains of the vandalized buses around the Fagba Junction have been recovered by men of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency recently in Lagos State.

Dr Boboye Oyeyemi, who happens to be the Corps Marshal of FRSC, urged the local government councils in the country to move market places far from the highway. The bodies of those that lost their lives in this fatal accident have been deposited by the FRSC emergency rescue teams at the Specialist Hospital’s morgue located in Ikare and the General Hospital’s morgue in Iwaro.
