Mechanic apprentice dies as jacklift slips under truck in Lagos

An apprentice mechanic whose identity is yet unknown, was crushed to death under the containerized truck he was working on last Monday. See more details!

An apprentice mechanic whose identity is yet to be ascertained died on Monday 14th of September, 2020, while working underneath a containerized truck around the Ajao Estate area of Lagos State. This unfortunate incident happened just few weeks before the deceased apprentice would secure his freedom.

According to the report, the apprentice mechanic was working under a fully-loaded twin twenty-foot truck in the evening around 8 pm when he was crushed to death after the jack raising the containerized truck slipped. Since the incident, there have been traces of blood under this truck while the whole area has been deserted.

From the eyewitness’s report identified as Bashiru Simeon, he revealed that the late Ibadan-based apprentice mechanic had been on this work for five days before this horrible accident.

He also confirmed the supposed freedom of the deceased from his boss, which was only a month away. We were able to find out about the other person, who was hitting the truck while working on it on the other side.

Simeon also disclosed that the body of the late apprentice, who was working on the trunk at the time of his death, was removed by the rescue team from the truck by lifting it up with a forklift.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and its fire unit, with the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) were all present at the scene. Nosa Okunbor, who happens to be the Head of Public Affairs of LASEMA, confirmed the story and stated that a male mechanic was found dead in a pool of blood on the floor upon their arrival. He reportedly died on the spot after being hit by the chassis frame member under the truck when the jack slipped.

Nosa Okunbor further revealed that the body of the late Apprentice mechanic has been handed over to the officers from Ajao Estate Police Division.
