Despite several warnings, roads signs and public announcements, quite a large number of motorcycles were recently impounded at different restricted locations across Lagos state this week. Press reports claim that the Lagos state Taskforce seized all the motorcycles (Okada) that were being used for commercial operations at restricted areas such as Surulere, Oyingbo and Yaba.

It should be noted that it has been over a year now that the Government of Lagos state has banned the operations of commercial motorcycles and tricycles in different parts of the state. Unfortunately, several Okada riders are still operating illegally across the restricted areas till today. This observation can be simply confirmed with the results of the recent raid operation conducted by the Lagos State task force in Surulere, Oyingbo and Yaba parts of Lagos where several motorbikes were impounded this week.

It should also be recalled that just last week, there were several press reports confirming that men of the Lagos state police command had a “face-off” with some Okada riders around the Lekki area. The face-off reportedly got so intense that some policemen claimed Okada riders attacked them with stones and other projectiles. This “provocative” behaviour reportedly prompted the Lagos state police commissioner to order his men to begin a full-fledged clampdown on every Okada rider found operating in any restricted area across Lagos state.
