There are still Good Samaritans in Nigeria! A driver at Lagos Airport returned a huge sum of money a passenger forgot in his car, willingly.

A traveler who boarded a taxi on arrival at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) Lagos, and forgot his international passport and 888, 000 was pleasantly surprised as the driver Mr. Adeniyi Olayinka, returned the items back to him intact.

Speaking to journalists, Olayinka, a member of the Airport Car Hire Association of Nigeria (ACHAN), said that he saw the items when he got back to the airport after dropping the passenger at Ibese, an area in the Ikorodu part of Lagos on Monday, July 29, 2019. After seeing the items packed in an envelope in the rear seat, he decided to return it back to the owner as it was not in his character to take what does not belong to him. He said:

“They were in $100 denomination. I counted and they were 24 in number totaling $2,400. When converted at prevailing rate of ₦370 as at Monday morning, it amounted to N888, 000. Based on the orientation and instructions we received from the leadership of ACHAN on weekly basis, I reported the findings to the officer on duty at the arrival car park of the airport. I was instructed to drop the parcel and its contents at our secretariat at Murtala Muhammed International Airport.”

Recounting the incident, the Good Samaritan who has been working at the airport for over fifteen years explained that the said money consisted of 24 pieces of $100 notes. Upon counting them, they made a total of $2,400, an equivalent of ₦888,000 at the ₦370 exchange rate obtainable on Monday. He proceeded to make a report of the development to an official at the arrivals car park.

Narrating the encounter, the passenger, Engr. Dele Ayeni, stated that he boarded the taxi upon arrival at the airport to his residence in Ikorodu. On the ride home, he took off his jacket and dropped it on the floor. As they arrived at his destination, he picked up the jacket but unknown to him, the envelop which was in the jacket had fallen off.
