Kogi truck accident leaves seven dead, many injured

Kogi breaking news. Seven persons are feared dead in the aftermath of an accident involving a truck,  which occurred in Lokoja, Kogi State. This incident happened on Tuesday 19th 2019. It transpired that the truck fell into a river.

Reports have it that the seven victims who lost their lives were in the truck that had an estimated 37 people in it. The accident took place in Enyogi River, a tributary of River Niger at about 5.00 a.m.

Apart from those who lost their lives in the tragedy, it appears that other people were badly injured. Though, no particular number of people who sustained degrees of injuries was stated.

The Sector Commander of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Kogi, Emmanuel Abe, also attested to this:

Mr. Emmanuel Abe confirmed that both the injured and dead passengers were taken to the Federal Medical Centre and the Kogi State Specialist Hospital, which are both in Lokoja. There was no mention of the driver who was driving the truck. It is not now known whether he  was among the dead or those who were lucky to survive the fatality. Also, Mr. Abe didn't state the number of males and females involved in this crash.

Regarding the cause of the incident, Sector Commander, of Federal Road Safety Corps (Mr. Abe) affirmed that the affected truck was travelling at high speed, concluding that it was the over-speeding that immediately led to and caused the accident. He also appealed to motorists to abide by the speed limit to avoid future incidents such as this on Nigerian roads, such as the ever busy Lagos-Ibadan expressway and others.

Truly, over speeding or high speeds has for a long time been one of the major causes of the several road accidents that occur across states in Nigeria on a daily basis. Incidents like these can be easily avoided by simply abiding by speed limits clearly spelt out on road signs. Yearly, the high statistics of accident victims keeps growing. If you happen to be in a vehicle and the driver is over-speeding, consider cautioning him/her to prevent unfortunate situations just like this because every life matters- including yours.
