Gunmen struck on the Benin-Lagos Expressway killing one passenger and abducting seven others on Sunday May 19, 2019. The seven people kidnapped were later rescued by men of the Nigeria Police Force.
Eyewitnesses reported that the gunmen had hijacked a minibus conveying the victims. According to a relation of one of the victims of the attack, the said bus had taken off from Ajah Lagos and was headed for Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom State. Unfortunately, the bus ran into the gunmen who were already on the highway robbing unsuspecting travelers.
DanMallam Muhammed, Commissioner of Police in Edo State confirmed the event. According to him, the passenger was killed in the course of trying to escape as they were all being taken into the bush by the suspected kidnappers.

One victim had sadly been killed before the police force came to rescue
The Police gave the kidnappers a hot chase, and succeeded in rescuing the victims unhurt, except the one killed before their arrival. “The police were able to rescue the victims unhurt, but unfortunately one of the passengers, who tried to escape during the abduction, was killed by the gunmen. The police went after the kidnappers in the bush and succeeded in rescuing the victims,” Muhammed said.
Kidnapping is a major problem in the country, with armed men taking hostage of victims in exchange for ransoms by their families and loved ones. The Nigeria Police is doing everything within its powers to make the country free from these hoodlums, so that law abiding citizens and residents will go about their businesses free of fear and intimidation.
Both authorities and residents should pay more attention to the security on Benin-Lagos expressway
