Prior to the recent celebration of the Nigerian educators on the World Teachers’ Day, the Nigerian federal government is all set to present the best schools and teachers with generous gifts. Specifically, FG has pledged 2 brand new Hyundai cars as rewards to the best two teachers in the country. From what we learnt, one teacher will be selected from the public school while the other will be from the privately-owned school. Aside from the individual car awards, the government will also give out buses to the selected best schools in each of the 774 local government areas in Nigeria along with other exciting gifts.
This information was made public by Professor Segun Ajiboye, who happens to be the chief executive/ registrar of the Teachers’ Registration Council in Nigeria. Earlier this year, Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu promised car rewards to best headteachers in 20 local government areas in the state.

The TRCN registrar revealed that the FG came up with such move as a way of showing appreciation to the unrelenting hard work of teachers across the country. It is also a way of promoting healthy rivalry among public and private school teachers. According to him, the rewards will motivate teachers, which will eventually promote country’s educational and economic development.

When the professor was asked to evaluate the profession of teaching in Nigeria since independence, he stated that the profession was of very high standard from 1960 when Nigeria gained freedom till when the Structural Adjustment Program was introduced by the Military in 1990. To him, it was the period when owing teachers their salaries for months became a norm, which in turn led to many of them leaving the job. Those that remained in the profession were taking extra jobs to be able to survive.

The TRCN also revealed that the latest initiative is bringing in remarkable results as most of the teachers now have certified professionals. However, he implored the employers of these teachers in both sectors and the employee themselves to always give their best while carrying out their duties for the growth of the educational sector.
