It is known that this rock has rolled from a height of about 3 m down and hit the rear bodywork of the Toyota Fortuner. At that time, there were 4 people inside the Toyota Fortuner, including Ginaly Cadap (the mother) and two youngsters, Zech (2 years old) and Xiehl (4 years old). At the scene of the accident, the large rock compressed the Toyota Fortuner's roof, completely deforming it. The rear right-hand tire of the mid-sized SUV was blown up while the windshield was totally broken. For more than a week, Benguet province, including Baguio City, had been experiencing heavy rains. This was considered the main cause of landslide and rock rolling down the road.

Previously, Kennon Street was temporarily blocked within a day because of the risk of landslides. At 8:30 am on Saturday, June 16, 2018, the day this road was opened to the traffic, this accident, unfortunately, happened, leading to the road being temporarily blocked again.

After the accident, the road was further blocked in order for local authorities to clean up the scene. At 15:40 p.m on the same day, Kennon Road was reopened, again, after the massive rock was removed from the scene.

Kennon Road is the shortest route between Baguio and Manila but is less secure as landslides occur frequently during the rainy seasons. The Marcos Highway is wider and safer than the Kennon Road, but it is less favored by motorists since it's longer.
