There are several automakers in the globe. Fierce competitions in the automotive industry push the weak at heart into extinction before they even arrive. We can't name many manufacturers that has stood the test of time, overcoming plenty of challenges of running the automotive business. One amongst them is the reputable Land Rover coming from the UK, having been known as one of the most popular car brands in the world since its birth. Even in Nigeria, the British brand sheds a constant light as a famous vehicle provider. This is evident in the number of Land Rover users across the country. Interestingly, not many people know much about the automaker.

1. Land Rover’s origin

Land Rover is said to have a complicated history. It started out as a sub-brand of Marque Rover, a British Company. The series I Land Rover Defender was its very first vehicle unveiled in 1948.

The Series I was among the first four-wheel drive vehicles that were mass produced. It is believed to have gotten inspiration for the original Willys Jeep.

Due to pressure from the British Government, Rover Company combined forces with the Leyland Motor Corporation in 1967. However, in 1978, Land Rover was established as an independent entity by BL. In 1988, the company joined the Rover Group after BL folded up. In 1994, BMW bought the Rover Group, and Ford bought Land Rover from BMW in 2000, and sold it to Tata Motors, an Indian firm in 2008. Tata Motors remains the owner of Land Rover till date, running it under Jaguar-Land Rover Banner. Despite being owned by the Indian company, Land Rover has its global headquarters in Coventry, United Kingdom.

2. Where Land Rover manufactures its vehicles

Land Rover has two manufacture sites, both in England.

The following Land Rover models are made in Solihull Plant, Solihull, England:

  • Land Rover Range Rover Sport
  • Land Rover Range Rover
  • Land Rover Discovery
  • Land Rover Range Rover Velar (2017-present)

The following Land Rover models are made in Halewood Plant, Halewood, England:

  • Land Rover Discovery Sport
  • Land Rover Range Rover Evoque

3. Bonus facts about Land Rover

  • The first Land Rover car was built 31 years before the company launch

Maurice Wilks has designed the very first Land Rover car in 1947 while it was not until 1978 that the company Land Rover was established.

  • Land Rover provided cars for Oxford and Cambridge students' race

In 1956, 2 Land Rover Series 1 Station Wagons had been provided for Oxbridge students to compete in a race from London to Singapore. The Oxford team had a dark colored vehicle while the Cambridge got a blue one.

  • Land Rovers used to have steering wheels in the middle

Yes, you heard that right. The very first Land Rover used to be designed tractor-like with its steering wheel placed in the middle.

  • The world first monster truck was invented by Land Rover.

30 years before the monster truck design became popular in the USA, Land Rover had made one for British Forestry Commission. This vehicle was released during 1950s and could navigate marshy environment as it's required.
