Driver runs over school children in Anambra, four died, 10 injured

Tragedy visited Oba community in Anambra state as a reckless driver rammed into school children, killing four and injuring 10. See how it all happened!

Tragedy occurred in Anambra State when a reckless driver ran over school children on their way back from school, leaving four of them dead and 10  sustaining injury on Monday, May 20, 2019.

The driver was arrested by the Police Command in Anambra State shortly after the incident happened. Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Ifeanyi Abanaofor, identified the driver in question as Chibuzor Elebo, and confirmed that he had been arrested.

According to an eyewitness, the cause of the accident was carelessness on the part of the driver. He was said to be on the phone while driving, and lost control of his Pathfinder car. The source said the driver had gone off his lane, onto another lane, and ran over the kids. Three of the victims died on the spot, and the fourth one was confirmed dead at the hospital where he was rushed to.

Narrating the sad event, another source at the venue said the accident took place shortly after the children were dismissed from school for the day. He stated that, following the close of school at 2pm, many students came out to find their way home.

“As they were milling down the Oba/Nnewi old Road, a vehicle, Infinity jeep with registration No. MYB 22 AAA, that was speeding while coming from Onitsha direction had brakes’ failure and rammed into the pupils, killing four on the spot while about 10 of them sustained injuries."

"The corpses of the deceased were deposited at Gateway Hospital morgue, Oba,”

the source added.

Dozie Nweke, Aboji Akanano Union Oba President-General, described the incident as a great loss to the Oba community, and commiserated with families of the deceased.

Investigations showed that two of the victims killed in the accident were siblings.
