Naijauto yesterday broke the news story about the driver of the Oil tanker that crushed 7 people to death, and wounded another 12 persons in Onitsha, Anambra state. The driver had earlier fled the scene on account of fears of being lynched by the possible irate mob that quickly gathered at the scene. It was a heartbreaking scene as Anambra indigenes witnessed the horror of the 7 deceased and the many others wounded.

In fresh developments to this story, the driver, one Junior Agari “M” has subsequently been arrested by the Anambra Police Command. Mr Agari is reported to be a 35 year old Warri resident, who was passing through or visited Onitsha on business.
The accident took place on the popular upper Iweka way, Onitsha, plunging the entire market town into mourning. The accident led to a disruption of business activities on the usually busy upper Iweka axis of the town. The tanker is of Mack model, bearing registration number EFF81XA. The driver is presumed to have lost control of the heavy duty vehicle leading to the vehicle plowing through the busy street and make shift market. Police say investigations are on-going.
Onitsha crowds have been known to dispense their own brand of justice
12 persons are still undergoing treatment at two hospitals they were taken by officers attached to CPS Onitsha who were first responders to the scene. Unfortunately the 7 deceased taken to the city morgue following the police arrival are still to be identified. The NPF Anambra state has advised members of the public with missing relatives to visit the mortuary for possible identification of the victims.

It is reported that the government had tried several times unsuccessfully to clear the immediate area around Upper Iweka of traders and hawkers. A task force had been appointed to effect the ban.
