From new information getting to us, at least five people were burnt to death, while two others were severely injured in an explosion that happened last Wednesday, involving a petroleum product tanker around the Ajilete area of the Owode-Idiroko Road in Ogun State.
Five people killed, other two injured in a horrific diesel tanker explosion in Ogun State
According to reports, the unfortunate incident took place after a diesel-laden tanker was descending the sloppy road and its tank detached suddenly from the lorry head, fell off and went up in flames.
From an eyewitness’s report, the truck was transporting 33,000 litres of diesel at the time when the horrific event happened. As a result, five people living in the area were killed on the spot of the accident scene while two other people sustained varying degrees of injuries.
Akinwunmi Olaluwoye, who happens to be Unit Commander, Idiroko Unit of the Federal Road Safety Corps, while confirming the fatal crash, revealed that only five people were killed in the explosion, contrary to the seven people that was earlier mentioned.

Olaluwoye stated that the crash happened at around 8:15 am, where the victims were burnt to death in the explosion. He further added that a bus and a motorcycle were razed down in this fire incident. The Commander disclosed that the corpses of the victims have been recovered by people from their families. According to him, the tanker did not crash into any vehicle. The tank exploded after detaching from its lorry head.
It was further revealed that the truck driver drove off with the head at the time when the authorities got to the scene of the accident. The police are currently investigating the explosion, according to Olaluwoye.
