Danny Drinkwater, who is a Chelsea footballer, has been banned from driving after ramming his Range Rover through a wall and causing minor injuries to 29-year-old and two female passengers in Mere, Cheshire on May 8th.
The Chelsea player admitted to drinking while driving and hurt his forehead with scratches during the incident. The Stockport Magistrates' Court said he had caused £50,000 (N22.9 million) worth of damage to the car and because of his actions and the implications it led to, was given a 20 months car driving ban.
It was admitted by Prosecutor Subi Chowdhury that Drinkwater called emergency services after he smashed through the wall, hurting himself and the few others, at about 00:30 BST. The prosecutor stated that the young man measured 87 micrograms of alcohol in 100 milliliters of breath, while the legal limit was 35 micrograms, thus making him culpable.

Drinkwater’s defender Robin Seller while defending the soccer player said that Drinkwater was "fully compliant" with the police. He added that Drinkwater had attended a private gathering and his friend had meant to drive him home but unfortunately couldn’t afterward. This made Drinkwater drive to his home located in Nether Alderley, Cheshire, during which he crashed the car. Seller said that Drinkwater understood his mistake and told him that he will be getting a driver.
The District Judge, Mark Hadfield said that the footballer player will also undergo community service as part of his sentence but Sellar pleaded on behalf of his client, asking the judge to limit the sentence to a fine since the player has not been convicted before.
However, Mr. Hadfield disagreed with this and sentenced Drinkwater with a 12-month community order with 70 hours' community service. The footballer will also pay £85 trial costs and an extra £85 for victims charge. He added:
"You knew when you got behind the wheel of that vehicle you should not have been driving."
Drinkwater is a protege of the Man-U Academy, now Chelsea star
Danny Drinkwater was formerly a Manchester United trainee as he graduated from Manchester United youth academy but didn’t make it to the senior team of the club. Drinkwater joined the Chelsea club in a £35m contract on the year 2017 in September. The soccer player has played 22 games since joining his present club as injury had prevented him in his first season with his team.
