An Igbosere High Court in Lagos State has granted ₦20 million bail to Nigerian musician, Iyanya Mbuk, aka Iyanya, after charges bordering on car theft.
The musician is facing a one-count charge filed against him by the Special Fraud Unit of the Nigerian Police and has pleaded not guilty during the arraignment.
After failing to appear in court six times, Iyanya was later granted bail in the sum of ₦20 million
While granting Inyanya bail, Justice Mobolanle Okikiolu-Ighile said,
I have perused the affidavit and the counter-affidavit of the parties; there is a prima facie case of criminal conversion against him.
However, there is nothing to show that the defendant will interfere with the proceedings of this case and nothing to show that he will jump bail if granted.
Bail is, therefore, granted to the defendant in the sum of N20 million with one surety in like sum
The Judge mandated that his guarantor should own a landed property in Lagos State with a certificate of occupancy.
The bail, according to her, should be fulfilled within seven days, starting from the day he was granted bail, or else," the bail shall be revoked."
Naijauto gathered the case was adjourned until May 27 and 28 for trial.
Inyanya, through his lawyer, Mr.D.I. Onyiwara, argued the charge brought against him wasn't a capital offense. He opined it was just a business deal that failed. He also assured the judge he won't jump bail if granted bail.
His lawyer said,
The defendant had always submitted himself to the SFU whenever needed
The prosecution, Chukwu Agwu, filed a 13-paragraph counter-affidavit in which he urged the court not to grant bail to Inyanya.

Iyanya was accused of turning someone's Toyota Land Cruiser Prado Jeep to his personal use
Reports said the police had filed the charge against the musician on March 15. Inyanya's arraignment was adjourned six times because he wasn't appearing before the court.
The defendant, on February 4, pleaded not guilty after the Judge threatened to use the court's jurisdiction to ensure Inyanya comes to court to take his plea.
The prosecutor claimed Inyanya converted someone's Toyota Land Cruiser Prado Jeep to his personal use. The vehicle's engine number is 2TR1385954, chassis number JTEBX7FJ7EK165480 and it was marked MAVINIY.
Reports said the Prado Jeep belonged to Temple Management Company LTD, the complainant.
According to the prosecutor, Agwu, Inyanya Mbuk committed the offense in September 2018. The offense contravened Section 285(10) of Lagos State Criminal Law.
