In a different twist to the political narratives people are used to, the Anambra lawmakers have rejected the ₦1b to buy foreign cars, insisting on made-in-Nigeria cars instead to save the car budget. Check more details here!

A report just got to us here on Naijauto, that the proposal of the State Government to buy Toyota Prado Jeeps at an estimated cost of ₦1 billion for the members of the Anambra State House Of Assembly, in discharging their oversight functions, has been rejected by the lawmakers.

The money involved in this acquisition according to the lawmakers, is not needed since the vehicles can be purchased from the Innoson Motors located in Nnewi, Anambra State with much lower cost.

The lawmakers, who spoke angrily when conversing to the journalists in collaboration with APC candidates in the House of Assembly in the South East, was wondering why the government of the state where Innoson is located, isn’t patronizing its products.

Looks like political office holders are beginning to pay more attention to locally produced vehicles

Just last week, some members of the state House of Assembly lamented the payment delay of the statutory allowances and other entitlements by the State Government.

Mr. Emma Madu, Anambra State House of Assembly Speaker’s Chief Press Secretary, when contacted, denied any knowledge of car gift from anybody.

Honourable Afam Ezenwafor, Chairman South-East 2019 Conference, House of Assembly candidate from APC, said:

“We are addressing you all on behalf of the lawmakers because of its implications on the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) lawmakers who are in the vanguard of encouraging locally made goods so that they do not become victims of witch-hunting by the powers that be in Awka.”

Hon. Afam further said the current market value for the 2018 Prado Jeep for the thirty members is estimated at about thirty three million naira each.

“Why should about N1 billion of Anambra State fund will be taken outside the shores of the state when it can be used to purchase Innoson IVM SUV Jeeps for the House members?

“You can’t be talking of ‘Aku lue uno’ (home grown investments), shouting it only on media without patronising our local investors. In fact, the Speaker, Hon Uche Okafor, should stop the planned purchase of SUV Prado Jeeps and ask the governor to rather get Innoson Jeeps for them,”

Toyota Prado is unarguably one of the most used models for official cars in Nigeria by top public office holders

He however implored governors from South East to make it compulsory for every political office holders in their states to use Innoson brand as their official cars. He noted that patronizing Nigerian-made vehicles will reduce the high demand for exchange of foreign currency. He also commended the former Governor of the state, Peter Obi, for acquiring more than 500 units of Innoson motors during his tenure.

He further said:

“Obi procured Innoson motors for AVS, schools and local government councils in the state. It is worthy of emulation.

“I commend Governor Ugwuanyi of Enugu State who purchased over 100 Hilux pickups from Innoson Motors for the security agencies in the state.

“Other South-East governors must do same. We can only grow our local economy and encourage think home investment when our leaders patronise local contents.

“Governors of Abia, Imo and Ebonyi states are not patronizing Innoson Motors and that’s sad. That attitude must change. I also commend the military for patronizing Innoson Motors.”

Mr. Emeka Ozumba, who is the Deputy Chief Press Secretary to Governor, while reacting to the latest development said there is no reason to panic. He believes that both arms of government – legislative and executive – will continue to enjoy good relationship.

He finally implored the general public to disregard such allegation.
