The night of Tuesday 18th April witnessed unknown gunmen assassinating Anthony Igboka, a former member of the state house of assembly. The horrifying attack occurred while the victim was in his car near Nimo village market square enroute from a meeting. Anthony Igboka popularly known by his traditional title ‘Mmili’ was a former Anambra State chairman of the Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA) and was until his death, President-General of the Nimo Town Development Union (NTDU) in Njikoka Local Government Area of the state. In January, the deceased had been conferred the award of ‘Hero of Njikoka’ at a colorful ceremony at Njikoka.

Reports indicate 4 gunmen carried out the dastardly deed, and escaped in a pickup van towards Abacha Eziowelle road. Igboka was shot multiple times at close range in his car, and police investigators at the scene afterwards recovered about 25 spent cases of 7.62 mm ammunition. Confirming this, the spokesman of the Anambra State Police Command, Haruna Mohammed, said that the matter is being investigated. Among Other things, the PRO stated:
“Police patrol team attached to Nimo division rushed to the scene and discovered one Chief Frank Anthony Igboka on the driver’s seat of his Chevrolet SUV vehicle lying unconscious in a pool of his blood and his body was riddled with bullet wounds.”

Mohammed also affirmed that the victim was rushed to Beke hospital Nimo but was confirmed dead on arrival. The remains of Anthony Igboka has been since deposited at the hospital morgue for proper autopsy. Visibly embittered by this news, the Anambra state governor, Willie Obiano, announced a 5 million naira reward to any person who can provide valuable information that can help the Police unravel the identities and whereabouts of Igboka’s killers. A statement made by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Don Adinuba, reads:
“Chief Obiano asked the intelligence and security officers to reenact the same level of enthusiasm and competence they exhibited in the arrest two weeks ago of Ikechukwu Udensi, the most wanted murder suspect in Anambra State, immediately he entered the state to collect illegal revenues."
