People who witnessed the accident said that it occurred at about 6 am when a truck crashed into a bus which was picking up passengers by the roadside. The driver of the truck was said to have immediately escaped from the accident scene.
Unfortunately, no one in the bus was alive after the crash. Six passengers were killed on spot whilte the other 5 died at the hospital they were taken to. It was even more heartbreaking that there was a pregnant woman among the fatality. Families of the victims came to the Central Hospital morgue to identify their relatives.

The tragedy led to a protest from victims’ families, friends and other drivers running on the route. The protesters burned fire on the road to express their fierce anger towards the reckless driving of tipper drivers in Benin. The driver of the ill-fated bus was also forced to stop his work.
Mr. Samuel Odukoya, the Edo Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the number of people died was nine. He also said that the protesters made it more difficult for his staffs to access the accident scene.
