A Mercedes-Benz truck driver shot dead by a police

An unknown police has shot gun driver of a truck in Aba, Abia State because the driver refused to bribe him N100.

The incident happened at around 7.30 am at the junction of Afoule market along Aba - Owerri in Aba. It also caused a serious congestion in both sides of the road. The roads from Brass junction to the Enugu-Port Harcourt motorway were also blocked.

According to eyewitnesses, a group of polices stopped the Mercedes-Benz truck when it was delivering gari and other farm products to Aba. They told that after the driver didn’t agree to bribe the policeman, there was an angry argument between the two sides. Then, a gun shot ranged out and blood of the driver was almost flooded the truck.

“There was confusion as people scampered to safety. Within a few minutes, there was heavy police deployment to the area,” the eyewitnesses said.

Mr. DSP Geoffrey Ogbonna, the Public Relations Officer of the Abia State Police, said that they were trying their best to find out who was the police that killed the truck driver. He also ensured that the police would have to deal with a harsh punishment for what he had done as the Police’s State Commissioner and there would be no tolerance for this situation.

He advised motorists and citizen to keep their work as normal and not be afraid of polices’ intimidation.

The Chairman of the Civil Liberties Organization (CLO) Aba Unit, Mr. Prof. Charles Chinekezi hastened Police agencies to identify and indict the police shot the driver in order to prevent others as well as reassure people in the country.
