According to a new report, the police command in Rivers State has confirmed the tragic death of seven officers during attacks by gunmen on Friday evening, 7th of May, 2021.
Seven officers were killed in separate attacks by gunmen on a single night in Rivers
Nnamdi Omoni, who happens to be the spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, while confirming the incident in a statement that was released on the 8th of May 2021, described the killing as "unprovoked and mindless". According to him, two policemen stationed at the special checkpoint in Choba in Ikwere LGA were attacked by gunmen who reportedly were in 2 branded Hilux pickup trucks. The attack that claimed the lives of the two officers was described as unexpected, mindless and a private vehicle belonging to one of the officers was set on fire by the gunmen.
Meanwhile, the spokesperson also revealed that a similar attack was witnessed at the Rumuji police station at Emuohua Local Government Area of the state by the same gunmen, who ended up killing the two officers on duty and setting their vehicle on fire. Omoni stated that two of the attackers sustained severe gun wounds and died on the spot during the exchange of gunfire with the police officers.
Two of the gunmen also died during the attacks, while others were able to escape
These gunmen also proceeded to the Obio/Akpor council where they killed three policemen during the attack. The heated exchange of gunfire made the hoodlums abandon their Hilux truck, which at the time was already riddled with bullets. They also sustained gun wounds and were able to escape with a Toyota Sienna they snatched around the area.
The police spokesperson disclosed that the three attacks on police officers happened in one night. He added that no police station was razed down by these gunmen but they lost five assaulted rifles in the attacks. He, however, appealed to the people living in the state to be more security conscious and inform the nearest police station if they sight anyone in their area with gun wounds.
