Travelling during festive periods in Nigeria has always been highly discouraged. Many cases of accidents in such periods are usually been caused by reckless driving and unnecessary rush. Most of these road mishaps would have been avoided if only the drivers were a little bit more patient on the road. According to a new traffic report getting to us, the Federal Road Safety Corps has disclosed that 49 Nigerians died in road accidents during the recent Eid-el-Fitr celebrations. The FRSC made this know via a statement released on Monday 9th of May 2022. The statement confirmed that 49 people died in a total of 119 crashes recorded across the country during the last Eid-el Fitr.

It was also revealed that the agency rescued 360 persons unhurt from those crashes. In total, the statement reports that 701 people were involved in multiple road accidents during the festive period, starting from the 29th of April to the 4th of May 2022. This information was made public in a statement given at the FCT by Assistant Corps Mashal (ACM) Bisi Kazeem, who is the Corps Education Officer of FRSC. He said the figure from the data released by the agency represents a 35.3% increase in the total number of people that did not sustain injuries in these crashes. According to him, this feat was made possible as a result of the quick mobilization and deployment of FRSC personnel for enhanced visibility of operatives during a special patrol on the highways. The increase in the number of rescued passengers is a welcomed improvement compared to 266 people that were rescued without injuries during the same period in 2021.

ACM Bisi Kazeem also said that 49 people died out of the 701 people involved in the road accidents that happened during Eid-El Fitr. He made reference to the statement given recently by the Corps Marshal that the agency now has better and wider coverage, thanks to the presence of more commands and outposts. This, according to him, also includes zebra points and roadside clinics for accident victims. The Corp Marshal Dr Boboye Oyeyemi as quoted by the CEM stated that there is a tremendous increase in the radio programs and motor park rallies sensitizing the public about road safety.
