A hard but wise decision.

While other automakers strive for best auto-producing, Mazda did something special and absolutely opposite - destroying nearly 5000 brand-new cars.

The story began in 2006 as the Cougar Ace loading 4703 new cars including five Mazda Speed 6s, fifty-six Mazda 5s, two-hundred-and-fourteen RX-8s, two-hundred-and-ninety five MX-5s, one-thousand-three-hundred-and-twenty-nine CX-7s, and two-thousand-eight-hundred-and-four Mazda 3s worth $103 million (N40 billion) in total. Unfortunately, the ship got into an accident that nearly drowned them all into the Pacific.

The ship had leaned at nearly sixty degrees for several weeks on the seas until it could be saved by an attempt that stole one team member’s life.

Another problem emerged after the salvation of the incident. The carmaker now cracked their brain to find out ways to deal with their vehicles. Myriad suggestions were put forward and rejected including selling them to auto repair training centers, Hollywood film producers, or even donation.

The reason they gave was that they were concerned about being taken to court someday, taking into account the airbags might fail to deploy after weeks of exposure to the salty sea air.

Besides, the automaker feared that crooked dealers might bring the cars abroad and label them as new cars, which could damage their reputation. In fact, that had occurred years ago when “Katrina cars” was sold to other countries after New Orleans’ flood.

Mazda initially said it was estimated that only 68 of these 4703 were damaged by the crash but later it decided that it should be all the cars to be crushed.

Mazda initially said it only crashed 68 cars but later it decided that it should be all 4703 cars

The procedure was as follows: making the car parts inoperable, cutting the wheels in half, tearing up the cars, then recycling the steel. They also made a dedicated machine to destroy the airbags.

Afterward, each car was taken into a portable crusher to be crushed.
